Under general supervision, performs tasks involving the installation, removal, testing, calibration, repair, and maintenance of electronic metering devices and auxiliary equipment.
Meter Technician Apprentice
Completes electric meter related work independently under general supervision. Connects and disconnects single phase meters as needed. Completes meter related service requests and service orders as required. Reads electric Kilo-Watt-Hour and Demand Meters. Performs general housekeeping duties in the Meter Shop area. Tests single and polyphase meters using various electric meter test equipment. Records and maintains record forms and reports as required. Completes other duties as assigned.

Senior Meter Technician
May provide leadership, supervision, work assignments, training, and guidance to less experienced staff. Performs tests, maintains, troubleshoots, and certifies electric meters in accordance with Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Guides and Protocols. Conducts meter testing for single and polyphaser meters. Installs voltage recorders and related power quality equipment. Determines the correct metering equipment to be installed in new and existing installations. Ensures that references are calibrated at mandated intervals and traceable to National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST). Tests and calibrates single and polyphase meters, solid state metering and recording equipment. Installs and removes metering and recording equipment and completes forms and reports as required. Maintains calibration records of all instruments. Programs solid state metering and associated recording equipment. Works in close proximity to energized equipment and observes all applicable safety rules and regulations. Investigates high bill complaints, field tests metering equipment and reviews energy consumption. Completes other job duties as assigned.

Basic knowledge in reading and interpreting electric diagrams. Basic knowledge of basic electric theory (Ohm’s Law). Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical systems. Basic knowledge of mathematical concepts to calculate meter constants, register ratios, power factors, and phasor representations. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word and Excel). Skill in the use of Volt and Amp Meters. Skill in using electric and hydraulic drills saws and cutters. Strong communications and writing skills in English, bilingual in English and Spanish preferred. Ability to learn Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Protocols and Procedures. Ability to test metering equipment. Ability to install or remove metering equipment, potential transformer, and current transformers. Ability to install wiring for transformer rated metering. Ability to remove recording equipment. Ability to compile records, forms, and reports. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with internal and external customers. Ability to work in close proximity to energized equipment and observe all applicable safety rules and regulations.

Strong communications and writing skills in English, (Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred). Ability to learn and carry out ERCOT Guidelines and Protocols. Ability to solve basic mathematical calculations. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with internal and external customers. Ability to work in close proximity to energized equipment, and to test metering equipment.

High school diploma, GED, or U.S. Equivalency report required and two (2) years’ experience in the installation or repair of electric meters. An appropriate combination of education and experience may substitute for the experience requirement.
Senior Meter Technician
High school diploma or GED, or U.S. Equivalency report required and four (4) years of experience in the installation or repair of electric meters. An appropriate combination of education and experience may substitute for the experience requirement.
