Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Metallurgist specializing in Failure Investigations to join our ISO 17025 accredited metallurgical laboratory team. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting comprehensive root cause failure analyses of metallic components and materials from various industries including oil and gas, aerospace, automotive, energy, construction, and manufacturing. This role demands strong analytical abilities, metallurgical expertise, and proficiency with laboratory instruments and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
•Perform failure analyses of metallic components using a combination of techniques including:
•Fractography (optical and SEM)
•Metallography (sample preparation, etching, microscopic evaluation)
•Hardness testing (Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers, Knoop, UCI)
•Mechanical testing (tensile, impact, fatigue)
•Chemical analysis (e.g., spectroscopy, EDS)
•Interpret and correlate findings with service conditions, customer reports, and engineering standards to determine root cause(s) of failure.
•Prepare comprehensive, professional technical reports suitable for both technical and non-technical clients, including photographic and micrographic documentation.
•Communicate findings clearly to customers via written reports, presentations, and discussions as needed.
•Interface with clients to clarify objectives, review findings, and provide consultative support.
•Ensure all work is performed according to established laboratory quality systems and industry standards (ASTM, ISO, etc.).
•Collaborate with other departments (e.g., mechanical testing, chemical analysis) to integrate multidisciplinary data into investigations.
•Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment used in failure analysis.
•Keep current with developments in metallurgy, failure mechanisms, and testing methods.
Qualifications:
•Education: B.S. or M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
•Experience: 3–7 years of hands-on experience in failure analysis within a commercial or industrial laboratory setting.
•Certifications: AWS CWI preferred, but not required.
•Proficient in metallographic sample preparation and interpretation.
•Skilled in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
•Familiarity with ASTM and ISO standards related to metallurgical testing and failure analysis.
•Strong understanding of common failure mechanisms (e.g., fatigue, corrosion, wear, overload, brittle fracture).
•Proficient in report writing and technical documentation.
•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
•Clear and professional communication with clients and internal teams.
•High attention to detail and organizational skills.
•Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Experience:
•Prior experience working in a commercial metallurgical or materials testing laboratory.
•Exposure to multiple industry sectors (e.g., aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, etc.).
•Litigation support or expert witness experience (a plus, but not required).
Work Environment:
•Primarily laboratory-based with occasional travel to client sites for on-site inspections or sample collection.
•Use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols is required.
•May involve handling of heavy samples
