Mivium is a materials science & technology company developing next generation wide band gap semiconductor materials. Headquartered in Fremont, CA, the company has 10+ years of R&D in its patented technology and is ready to grow the team.
With $5m of fresh funding from its seed capital raise, you can be on the ground floor of a revolutionary materials movement that will send shockwaves through the industry.
We're seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer with a passion for hands-on prototyping, system integration, and real-world impact to join our agile engineering team. This role offers the opportunity to work on early-stage product development, influence design direction, and build hardware from concept to validation.
This position will be part of the team within the R&D department.
- Design and prototype precision mechanical systems that integrate seamlessly with electrical and electronic subsystems (PCBs, wiring, sensors, actuators).
- Collaborate with electrical, software, and materials engineers to design high-performance, compact, and thermally stable systems for semiconductor tools.
- Support cleanroom-compatible designs, including vacuum systems, thermal enclosures, and EMI shielding.
- Conduct FEA simulations (thermal, structural, vibrational) to validate and optimize designs.
- Develop and maintain CAD models, technical drawings, BOMs, and related documentation.
- Own rapid prototyping efforts using 3D printing, CNC machining, or external fabrication partners.
- Participate in system bring-up, debug, and failure analysis during lab testing.
- Contribute ideas to improve design reliability, cost, and manufacturability.
- B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field.
- 3–6 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in semiconductor, robotics, or precision instrumentation.
- Experience working on electro-mechanical systems, with comfort around wiring, cabling, connectors, PCB mounting, and sensors.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL).
- Knowledge of thermal management, material selection, and DFM/DFA for low- to medium-volume builds.
- Startup mentality: hands-on, cross-functional, proactive, and excited to build new things from scratch. Prior work in a startup or R&D-heavy environment with iterative prototyping.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
- Experience with semiconductor capital equipment (e.g., gas flow, vacuum systems, plasma systems, metrology tools, wafer handling).
- Familiarity with PCB layout and schematic tools (e.g., Altium, KiCad).
- Exposure to cleanroom standards, vacuum system design, or high-voltage/high-frequency environments.
- Experience with LabVIEW, Python scripting, or data acquisition systems.
We are looking for passionate thinkers, doers, and problem-solvers who share our vision that big challenges are big opportunities for change.
