PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the general direction of a Supervisor-Power Station Maintenance or designee, performs all maintenance functions which may be assigned with the overall goal to maintain or enhance the reliability and efficiency of the generating plant. Performs repairs and maintenance on physical structures and detailed maintenance on heavy industrial power plant equipment. May work irregular work schedules, including shift work.
1. Installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains all physical structures and equipment of the power plant such as: steam generator, turbine generator, combustion turbines, cooling systems, ash handling and coal systems, and pollution control equipment.
2. Troubleshoots, analyzes, repairs, and tests all mechanical equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines and plant procedures.
3. Handles coal and may operate coal handling equipment or railroad locomotive.
4. Maintains a clean, safe work environment and prevents fire hazards.
5. Works safely and encourages safe work of others.
6. Performs other duties and functions as required for safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the generating station in a timely manner as assigned by management.
7. Operates drill presses, lathes, milling machines, electric and gas welding equipment, various hand and powered tools, alignments, and vibration analysis equipment.
8. Stays current with changes in the technologies of both tools and equipment.
9. Steps up to higher classified operations positions as scheduled by management.
10. Performs other duties as required by management.
High school graduate or equivalent required. 6 years power plant/heavy industrial mechanical or operational experience (for example: boilers, turbines, large pumps, conveyors, compressors, valves, etc.) is required. A minimum of 9 relevant applicable college credits may be substituted for 2.5 years of experience. Non-credit courses or GPI Learn modules may be submitted for consideration. Relevant military mechanical/operational training and/or experience may be substituted for power plant experience.
Must have a valid driver’s license (minimum Class F).
Proficient in troubleshooting, analyzing, repairing, and returning to service mechanical equipment and system components varying in size, design, and manufacturer.
Capability to further their skills to become more knowledgeable in power plant production.
Strong knowledge of:
o Plant steam/water cycle.
o Functions of fans, dampers, pumps, pulverizers, compressors, dryers, valves of varied types; applications and methods of repair.
o Drill presses, lathes, milling machinery, various hand and powered tools.
o Bearings; couplings; methods of cleaning andrepair.
o Lubrication, and alignment; insulation materials, wrapping and installation procedures; paints, solvents, cleaning agents, tools and applications.
o Welding techniques, equipment, and applications.
Ability to:
o Interpret blueprints, service manuals and technical data of varied types.
o Train and mentor Maintenance Mechanic 1 and 2 as directed.
o Make mature decisions with or without direct supervision.
o Work courteously with customers and coworkers.
o Demonstrate good judgment.
o Demonstrate knowledge of CU’s safety policies by working safely.
o Be dependable due to the nature of duties of the position.
o Continue education and development to further an understanding of plant maintenance.
o Successfully navigate various electronic programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suites, other applicable information technology applications, and self-service platforms.
Pushing, pulling, stooping, lifting 55 pounds regularly and 80 pounds occasionally, working at heights, and being able to visually differentiate between color-coded electrical and electronic equipment associated with this job. Must be able to work within the rated capacity of the Utility’s aerial lifts, ladders, fall restraint devices, and/or other related equipment. Pulmonary function and hearing test are required.
Works in a power generating plant environment with the inherent noise and heat of large machinery and fugitive dust and fumes from the coal fuel. The work may be inside or outside of plant buildings in all types of weather as required. Work at heights on plant structures will sometimes be required. May work in proximity to toxic and corrosive chemicals.
A safety-sensitive position involves the performance of duties which may have a direct and immediate impact on the safety of the public and other public employees. This is a safety sensitive position.
- May be required to wear a respirator. Must be clean-shaven such that facial hair will not interfere with the respirator seal during annual fit testing of respiratory protection and when required to wear the respirator on the job.
- Must be able to respond to audible and visual alarms, including safety and production alarms.
- Shift work may be required. Must be willing to work overtime and under pressure in order to return equipment to service or meet imposed deadlines.
- Required to wear uniform clothing provided by City Utilities, including flame retardant/arc rated clothing. Management retains the right to require replacement due to wear or staining.
- Skills and abilities are expected to increase as the employee gains experience. Will usually be working with others but may be assigned to work alone on jobs within capabilities.
- Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
- Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.
If a MM 3 incumbent meets the education and experience requirements of a MM 4, this person must have been in the MM 3 position for a minimum of 1 year and receive a minimum passing score of 70% on the test provided by Power Generation Management.
