The Leak Detection Technician is responsible for managing the company’s leak detection program, with duties divided into three main areas: field investigation, data analysis, and repair coordination. Field work involves using acoustic loggers, correlators, and other specialized tools to locate leaks in the water distribution system. The technician will process and interpret field data to identify leak locations and develop detailed maps, location information, and work orders for field crews. This position is also responsible for tracking the status of repairs, following up on completed work orders, and documenting results to ensure accurate recordkeeping and program effectiveness.
- Work with GIS and Engineering staff to determine target areas and locations for deployment of leak detection equipment.
- Work to develop an understanding and mastery of leak detection equipment best practices, limits, and optimum placement strategies to maximize potential of successful detection of leaks.
- Management of leak detection equipment including performing regular required maintenance, cleaning, replacement of batteries, and other actions to ensure the equipment is maintained in good working order.
- Testing of leak detection equipment to ensure that it is functional and working as intended. Coordinate with manufacturers representatives as needed to aid in this process.
- Locating infrastructure within the Artesian service area for placement of leak detection equipment.
- Deploying acoustic loggers or other leak detection equipment in the field to locate leaks. This may be in both above and below grade locations such as within stations, in meter pits, within valve boxes, etc.
- Collect leak detection equipment as needed from field deployments.
- Manage the collection, aggregation, organization, long term storage, and disbursement of data collected by the leak detection equipment.
- Analyze collected data with the assistance of various computer programs and dashboards to determine the locations of likely leaks.
- Use correlators and other equipment to field verify the presence of suspected leaks based on collected data. Technician is expected to learn and ultimately master the operation of the correlator and other equipment as needed to provide the best possible information on the location of leaks out in the field. Responsible for marking these suspected leak locations out in the field.
- Develop work orders with necessary mapping and other information to be inputted into Artesian’s Mobile Work Order system.
- Verify the presence of suspected leaks and record information on their exact location, nature, suspected volume, cause, etc.
- Communication and coordination with vendors who supply the company with leak detection equipment.
- Research leak detection technology, best practices, and other developments in the industry. Recommend additional tools, strategies and approaches to management.
· Assist with the development and implementation of standard operating procedures for leak detection.
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Operations, Planning, Accounting, and Safety to align engineering activities with broader organizational objectives. Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to foster collaboration and ensure alignment of project priorities.
· Perform any and all other appropriate functions as required.
- High School Diploma.
- Experience in locating underground water utilities.
- Knowledge of GIS computer programs.
- Proficiency with navigating Microsoft Windows and utilizing applications such as: Excel, Word, etc...
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Experience driving with a trailer in urban areas.
- Experience with reading and understanding underground utility plans.
- Familiarity with navigating cellphone applications, storage, etc.
Walking, lifting, bending over and climbing are required to perform fieldwork. The ability to manipulate a keyboard is required for computer operation and manipulating data. Speaking, hearing, reading and writing are necessary to effectively communicate with staff and other departments along with the preparation of reports. Visual acuity is required for analyzing data and figures and using a personal computer. Responsibilities require advanced thought processes and learning abilities to permit the development of plans and courses of action from complex alternatives. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Requires ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Position requires activities to be performed in both interior and exterior conditions. Interior work will be performed in a climate-controlled office environment. Exterior work requires exposure to outside environmental conditions such as extreme heat and cold along with proximity to moving mechanical parts, vibration, noise, fumes, odors, dusts, and gases.
