The Lead Fuel Technician takes directions from the Fuel Supervisor. The Lead Fuel Technician is responsible for starting, stopping, regulating, controlling, evaluating, performing routine maintenance, and operating a variety of mobile equipment, material handling systems and ash conditioning equipment in a safe, reliable, efficient manner and in full compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Perform duties as required to receive, transfer fuel, blend, and transfer fuel to in plant silos.
- Maintains the fuel handling equipment to produce a clean and safe environment in the plant. Regularly inspects and lubricates equipment as required to minimize maintenance.
- Operates mobile and stationary equipment required to handle coal and to blend and deliver fuel to silos.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Under moderate to minimal supervision, the Lead Fuel Technician will perform coal handling function including the operation and maintenance of all coal handling equipment. Maintain heavy equipment and related devices used to prepare and transport coal and other materials. Where required, perform other functions related to loading and unloading of coal. Perform or assist in the performance of maintenance work on any type of coal handling and/or ash disposal equipment. Clean coal conveyor system as required, clear all chutes, check all oil levels on gear boxes and conduct daily inspections on all equipment. Maintain equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition. Perform duties in accordance with Company's safety rules, operating regulations and practices, and report unsafe conditions and practices. Direct the work of employees assigned to assist. Train for and carry out assignments in firefighting, first aid and other emergency response programs as required. Prepare and maintain records if required using Microsoft Word and Excel, or other software. Assist in training other employees as needed; perform other job duties as assigned.
The Lead Fuel Technician reports to the Fuel Supervisor and responds to directions from the Control Room Operator in the absence of the Fuel Supervisor. The Lead Fuel Technician works in cooperation with the operations and maintenance departments on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant.
Physical requirements include: working on feet for 12 hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, respiratory protection, which requires employee to pass medical clearance to wear a respirator and employee must remain clean shaven at all times in the respirator seal area to meet OSHA requirements, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, etc.). Working with hazardous materials may be required.
Position requires extended working hours with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
- Education: high school education plus two years of related industrial experience. Work experience in coal handling operations and maintenance is desired. Diesel mechanic experience is a plus.
- Thorough working knowledge of the tools and equipment and their use as required in the work and a working knowledge of equipment Lockout/Tagout procedures and the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work. Knowledgeable about the location, layout, functions and operation of the coal and ash handling facilities Ability to operate heavy equipment (i.e., front-end loader, dozer). Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plants and material handling equipment.
- Ability to work overtime both scheduled and unscheduled, on days of relief and beyond regular work schedule. Ability to work rotating shift work, including holidays, nights, and weekends.
