The Fuel Technician is responsible for starting, stopping, regulating, controlling, evaluating, performing routine maintenance, and operating a variety of mobile equipment, material handling systems and ash conditioning equipment in a safe, reliable, efficient manner and in full compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Perform duties as required to receive, transfer to outdoor silos, blend, and transfer fuel to in plant silos.
Receives fuel, transfers limestone to outside and inside storage silos.
Maintains the fuel handling equipment to produce a clean and safe environment in the plant. Regularly inspects and lubricates equipment as required to minimize maintenance.
Operates mobile and stationary equipment required to handle limestone and to blend and deliver fuel to silos.
The Fuel Technician operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision, performing duties independently with only general direction given. Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines. The Fuel Technician encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.
The Fuel Technician must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, and in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. The Fuel Technician must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant employees, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvements. The Fuel Technician must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.
All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met.
The Fuel Technician reports to the Shift Supervisor and responds to direction from the Control Room Operator in the absence of the Shift Supervisor. The Fuel Technician works in cooperation with the operations and maintenance departments on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant.
Physical requirements include: working on feet for 12 hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, respiratory protection, which requires employee to pass medical clearance to wear a respirator and employee must remain clean shaven at all times in the respirator seal area to meet OSHA requirements, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, etc.). Working with hazardous materials may be required.
Position requires extended working hours with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and perform basic mathematical computations (high school diploma or equivalent preferred) plus one (1) year of experience in a power plant or material handling environment, or equivalent education and experience.
Ability to operate heavy equipment (i.e., front-end loader, dozer). Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plant and material handling equipment.
Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists, and slings, and implements such as lances, shovels, pry bars, etc.
Ability to observe hazards and avoid accidents by correctly anticipating the consequences of actions personally performed or performed by others.
Ability to work overtime both scheduled and unscheduled, on days of relief and beyond regular work schedule. Ability to work rotating shift work, including holidays, nights, and weekends.
