Lead Assayer
Reporting to the Lab Supervisor the Lead Assayer is primarily responsible for maintaining records of the receipt and analysis of samples, standards, and reference materials. On occasion, there may be other duties given by the Lab Supervisor during the course of a shift.They must be a committed team player with a strong knowledge of and dedication to Assay Lab, Mill safety and Milling production methods. Other duties will be assigned as per operational needs.
The list of duties and responsibilities below is not exclusive or exhaustive, and the employee will be required to undertake such duties as may reasonably be expected within the scope of the position. All employees are required to be professional, cooperative, and flexible in line with the requirements of the position.
Operational / Technical Execution:
•Crush and pulverize ore samples to the consistency required following Standard Operating Procedures.
•Weigh and mix samples following Standard Operating Procedures.
•Load and unload furnace following Standard Operating Procedures.
•Fuse and cupel samples following Standard Operating Procedures.
•Follow SOP’s. in order to maintain quality control.
•Notify the Chief Assayer of any concerns, changes and re assays.
•Perform re assays when needed and inform crew to pull corresponding samples.
•Knowledge and able to perform Fire Assay duties when needed or asked.
•Knowledge and able to perform Sample Prep duties when needed or asked.
•Arrange test tubes and coors cups appropriately.
•Transfer beads to test tubes and coors cups.
•Acid parting and digestion of beads including analysis.
•Pull crucibles according to grade of assay results.
•Randomly select a crushed reject sample from each crusher and pulp from pulveriser and perform a screen test to ensure particle size requirements are being achieved and document in Random Screen Test Spreadsheet.
•Randomly pull Geo/Mill samples and record proper information for monthly checks.
General Administration and Controls:
•Optimizing and calibration of AA Machine.
•Ensuring accurate results are obtained while operating AA Machine at all times.
•Ensure accurate results are obtained while operating Microbalance.
•Accurate and concise reporting relating to all Assay certificates.
•Perform routine inspections on machines and equipment to determine if any maintenance is required.
•Maintain equipment such as Crushers, Pulverisers, etc.
•Perform Maintenance on AA Machine when required.
•Calibrate dispensers and weigh balances each shift and records data in logbook.
•Responsible for leading the crew in a safe manner to meet objectives/targets.
•Responsible to perform a minimum of one Job Task Observation monthly.
•Conduct crew Safety Meeting Huddles on weekends and/or when Supervisor is off site.
•Organize workspace to process samples from mine following a chain of custody procedure.
•Clean and organize work area and machines to maintain a clean working environment.
•Clean-up of Wet Lab area during the course of shift and before leaving work.
•Ensures cleanup checklist is completed in all areas of Lab on last day of shift rotation.
•Replenishes Wet Lab supplies before leaving on the last day of the rotation or the last workday of the week.
•Maintain records of the receipt and analysis of the samples, standards, and reference materials.
•Follows all laboratory procedures according to SOP’s while wearing ALL appropriate PPE and encourages co-workers to do the same.
Qualifications and Skills Requirement:
•Legal to work within Canada.
•Strong leadership skills.
•Good safety knowledge and understanding with the ability to recognize, reduce or eliminate hazards and situations that may cause problems.
•Strong interpersonal, verbal communication, analytical, organizational and time management skills.
•Excellent written communication and presentation skills.
•Must be physically fit and fit to work.
•Must work safely alone and in a team environment.
•The capability to work positively with a team of professional and technical people in a changing, creative, and energetic environment.
•Carry out routine reporting and administrative duties as required
.
•Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
