Job Summary
NiSource is currently seeking Summer Interns in Merrillville, IN. Successful applicants will become integral members of the department while learning within a team environment, completing meaningful tasks and collaborating with team members and leaders on important projects. These positions will be a great opportunity for the candidate desiring to launch their career in the Operations field. Successful applicants will build professional relationships with other interns and all levels of NiSource personnel while participating in rewarding professional development exercises and fun, team-building activities. Interns will obtain a broad overview of NiSource's operations and current events in the utilities industry.
This position follows a hybrid schedule, requiring on-site presence three days per week and remote work two days per week.
- Assist with the upkeep and filing of project documentation, including reports, contracts, and permits.
- Maintain and organize the Real Estate shared project folder structure for easy access and version control.
- Support the archiving and updating of as-built drawings, schematics, and engineering documentation for facilities and equipment.
- Attend project meetings and document meeting minutes, action items, and status updates.
- Participate in construction site visits to observe progress, capture site photos, and prepare field observation notes.
- Review basic design documents and submittals from consultants, contractors, and vendors.
- Monitor construction schedules and budgets, flagging issues and assisting with financial reconciliation.
- Support facilities team in routine inspections and preventative maintenance activities.
- Assist with coordination of minor facility repairs, vendor scheduling, and service requests.
- Help maintain records of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, including maintenance logs and compliance documentation.
- Gain exposure to building systems and understand how they support daily operations.
- Assist in tracking project costs and ensuring proper allocation between Capital and O&M budgets.
- Learn and apply company safety protocols and emergency procedures within facilities environments.
- Conduct facility inspections to assess building conditions and identify maintenance and improvement needs
- Independently project manage a smaller-scale facilities project
- Responsibilities will include scope development, contractor coordination, scheduling, budget tracking, and project closeout documentation.
- Completion of at least 2 years of a bachelor’s degree program in Construction Management, Facilities Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to travel locally to construction and facility sites as needed.
- Rising Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Facilities Management, or related discipline.
- Experience or coursework in AutoCAD, Revit, or Microsoft Project.
- Basic understanding of HVAC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing
- Ability to walk construction sites and active facility environments.
- Occasional lifting of materials or equipment up to 25 lbs.
- Comfortable working in both office and field settings.

The Corporate Real Estate & Facilities Project Specialist Intern will support the planning, design, construction, and ongoing operations of NiSource’s real estate portfolio. This includes both remodeling and new construction projects, as well as day-to-day facilities management tasks across corporate offices and utility service locations. The intern will gain hands-on experience in project coordination, facilities operations, and infrastructure maintenance, contributing to the full lifecycle of real estate and facilities initiatives.
