The Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) has an opening for an Energy Planning & Decarbonization Intern in our Carbon Neutrality Team, located in Lansing, MI.

Position Summary

Job Type: Full-Time Summer Internship

Dates: May 11, 2026 - August 07, 2026

Pay Rate: $22.00 per hour.

Energy Planning and Decarbonization is a growing department with increasing strategic priorities. Forecasting and planning for diverse energy resources that aligns BWL's strategic goals with State legislative goals will ensure we meet our Clean Energy and Renewable Energy targets. This position will support these needed tasks, as detailed in the scope of work.

Essential Functions

- Intern will perform work supporting the following programs:

- Carbon Neutrality tasks: Data Analysis/Tracking/GIS:

- Work between departments to map CN program activity, including electric vehicle customers and other carbon neutrality program participants.

- Create a standardized tracking system of historic data that may be mapped in GIS.

- Energy Planning Tasks:

- Data analysis and data processing of energy load and capacity modeling outputs. Organize and standardize data processes.

- Maintain consistent data management procedures and quality control.

- Utilizes standard office software (i.e., spreadsheet, word-processing, database) and SAP.

- Attend training and safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by the BWL or government agency such as MIOSHA.

- Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.

- Predictable and reliable attendance.

- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Specifications

- Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution with an emphasis on environmental engineering, chemistry, or science related field with junior or senior status during the summer of 2026.

- Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

- Employees are required to follow the BWL Safety Manual and wear required personal protective equipment, adhere to BWL safety rules and regulations, attend all training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA. Normal office and occasional field work.

- Field conditions may include heat, cold, dust, and/or noise.

- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

- The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.

- Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
