ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
Internship Title – Energy Resource Optimization
Department – Advanced Technology Solutions
Minimum Education level: PhD
Preferred Majors: Operations Research, Power System Optimization
Step into the action and tackle real-world energy challenges! You'll model, analyze, and solve optimal resource planning problems to help the grid operate efficiently and reliably, gain hands-on experience with advanced analytical tools, make data-driven decisions, and see the direct impact of your work on the future of energy systems.
Who We Are
ISO New England is one of the most pivotal energy companies you may have never heard of. Our job is to oversee the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six states of New England and to administer the region’s $ 10 billion-plus “stock exchange” for the buying and selling of wholesale electricity. Our work ensures that over 14 million people can reliably turn their lights on and complete their jobs, take care of their families, and live in comfort with convenience.
Department Description:
The Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) department engages in both long-term research projects and near-term design/process improvements. The department consists of experts in three topic areas: power systems, simulations, and markets. In all projects, the goal of the department is to provide innovative and practical solutions to current and emerging questions for ISO New England.
What You’ll be Working On:
Join the ATS team and contribute to a research project focused on solving large-scale resource optimization problems in practical power systems. You will test method development approaches, evaluate their performance, and identify potential improvements to make the methods more optimal and efficient.
What You Will Gain:
As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience tackling real-world testing and analysis challenges. You’ll be exposed to power system modeling and data analytics, strengthening both your technical expertise and your ability to apply optimization concepts in a practical energy industry context.
How Will You Make an Impact:
Your work will directly support an ongoing ATS research project on optimizing resource planning for power systems- helping to shape innovative methods that improve system reliability and efficiency for the future grid.
What We Look For In a Candidate:
- Deep knowledge of stochastic optimization.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Interest in power systems and data analytics
