: SP3, Level 5, $91,200.00 - $114,000.00 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity. This position may be eligible to receive a Northern Living allowance. Northern Living allowances are provided based on the location of the position and where an employee primarily works and resides.
Inspector, Field Operations, Northwest

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently recruiting for an Inspector to join our team in Field Operations, Northwest, in the Regulatory Compliance (RC) branch. Field Inspectors at the AER are the eyes and ears of the organization in the field. We conduct proactive inspections in a multitude of disciplines, respond to incidents and complaints form stakeholders, provide industry education in the field, and support other functions of the branch and the enterprise with field-level intelligence.
Your primary responsibilities will be to conduct inspections on drilling, servicing, and completions operations, but will also include responding to spills, investigating incidents, and responding to public complaints to ensure compliance with AER rules and requirements.
What your day-to-day will look like:•Lead and independently conduct complex inspections on operations/activities within the AER’s jurisdiction. Prepare inspection plans and sampling equipment (if necessary). Collect and analyze information from varied and numerous sources to determine compliance, resolve problems and make recommendations to improve environmental practices. Prepare letters and inspection reports. Perform follow up action as required or forward the non-compliance item for possible enforcement action to an investigator.
•Follow and support all planning and reporting activities in alignment with AER policies, procedures, the Compliance Assurance Program, and Branch Operational Plan. Work and support team members to meet the objectives of the Compliance Assurance Program.
•Respond to and support others in handling incidents and stakeholder complaints. Support the resolution of complex complaints between AER stakeholders.
•Respond to calls on the 24-hour emergency response/complaint line (on-call).
•Communicate and consult with industry regarding areas of concern. Lead meetings and deliver technical presentations to industry and government agencies. Participate in synergy groups and at open houses.
•Support provincial teams as needed and be a primary representative needed when developing proactive inspection programs. Share the information between provincial teams and field centre teams. Assist and/or train and mentor other staff as needed.
•As a representative of AER in the field, field inspectors will adhere to all safety procedures, including, completion of field site hazard assessments, following PPE protocols, conducting bump testing and calibration of monitors, following safe driving practices as per the fleet vehicle policy, representing the AER on with internal and external stakeholders, collaborating with the health & safety team, understanding and following best practices when acting as a lone worker in dealing with public interactions and concerned stakeholders, and the risk assessment and response to incidents.
•Contribute to provincial initiatives or assignments related to operational needs, regulatory, and technical issues as appropriate. Participate in technical teams to develop and implement policies and procedures. Act as a subject matter expert, providing support to hearings or ADR sessions as required.
What we’re looking for in you:
•Post-secondary training in engineering, environmental sciences or other related fields is considered an asset.
•6+ years in directly related regulatory, field operations, or other related experience.
•Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in:
+ Drilling Operations
+ Well Servicing
+ Completions/fracturing operations
•Ability to work, lead, and independently conduct complex inspections within subject area.
•Strong communication and organizational skills.
•Strong analytical skills and the ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgement.
Additional Information:
•All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
•This is a permanent position located in Field Operations Northwest – location is flexible, but most current operations are within 100km of Grande Prairie. Applicants must be available to conduct majority of field work within that radius.
•Pre-placement Medical required.
•Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.
•Must have physical ability to conduct typical Oil & Gas field work, including driving prolonged distances, climbing stairs, ladders, etc., walking around industrial sites, walking into remote locations where necessary, and ability to work in all weather conditions.
•First Aid, H2S Alive, and defensive driver training are required, and will be provided.
•Some overnight travel may be required on occasion (several times/year).
•Approximately 50% field work/50% office work.
•Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
