The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a variety of heavy equipment to load, transport, and handle structural steel and other materials as required. The role includes inspection, maintenance, and cleaning of equipment, crew-based work, and adherence to all safety rules, OSHA regulations, jobsite PPE requirements, and shipping/overhead crane operations.
- Operate a range of heavy equipment (e.g., loaders, fork trucks, overhead crane/hoist) in a safe and productive manner.
- Load structural steel onto trailers, rig and secure loads, and assist with shipping operations.
- Perform pre-shift inspections, daily maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs of equipment.
- Work closely with crew members in a team environment and follow instructions from supervisors.
- Follow all jobsite safety procedures, wear required PPE, and adhere to OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions; be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs or more as required.
- Operate overhead cranes and hoists safely, including rigging and signaling, in coordination with shipping/logistics team.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance, inspections, and hours when required.
- Communicate clearly—both orally and in writing—with supervisors, crew members, and logistics/shipping personnel.
- Participate in drug testing, as required for safety‐sensitive roles.
- Proven experience operating various types of heavy equipment (construction/industrial) in a safe and effective manner.
- Knowledge of proper heavy equipment operation, inspection, maintenance, and cleaning.
- Ability to work effectively in a crew environment and follow direction from supervisors.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
- Familiarity with safety rules, jobsite PPE requirements, overhead crane/hoist operations and rigging practices.
- Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs or more, climb in/out of equipment, bend, twist, and work for extended periods.
