A Driller will operate and maintain a rock drill drill used to drill holes for blasting in rock quarries.
Drill holes are then filled by the blast crew with explosives to break solid masses of rock into adequately sized pieces. Our customers then crush and process the rock in order to make construction materials such as concrete stone, base stone, pipe bedding and rip rap.
A Driller will start the morning at the Ahlgrimm Explosives shop in Hortonville. The Driller will then gather the various fluids including compressor oil, hammer oil, DEF and off road fuel required to operate the rock drill machine. The Driller will also gather any drill bits, steel, couplings or any other part that is worn and needs replacement on the drill. After all these materials are loaded onto the Driller’s company pickup truck, the Driller will drive to the quarry where the drill is located. Locations of holes to be drilled are previously marked out on the quarry bench by the Blaster in Charge.
The Driller will perform the following tasks at the quarry:
- Fill all fluid tanks on the equipment
- Inspect the drill for any defects
- Properly warm up the drill
- Drill holes in the specified location and depth
- Fill out drill log recording number of holes drilled and depth of each hole
- Measure and plug all holes drilled
- Properly shut down and inspect the drill once all holes are drilled or when there is no more time left in the work day
After all the drilling has been completed, the driller will drive back to the Hortonville shop and can re-fill all fluid containers to streamline the process of the next morning.
