About This Job

Company Overview

Ellipsis U.S. Onshore (“Ellipsis”) is a Dallas-based private energy company focused on the acquisition and development of large, producing oil and gas assets across major onshore basins in the United States. Backed by Westlawn Group (a Houston-based private investment firm), Ellipsis executes a non-operated strategy and currently manages a portfolio of approximately 1,500 wells producing in excess of 20,000 BOE/day across the Permian Basin, Haynesville Shale, and DJ Basin. We pride ourselves on a collaborative culture and a data-driven approach to maximizing asset value and growth.

Position Summary

Ellipsis seeks an experienced Geologist to join our team and support our growth strategy. In this role, you will be responsible for screening and evaluating new acquisition opportunities as well as maintaining and managing geological datasets for our existing portfolio of assets. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in petroleum geology (with an emphasis on unconventional reservoirs), proficiency with industry-standard geological software (Petra required), and excellent analytical skills. Experience in the Permian Basin and Haynesville Shale plays is highly desirable. This position will work closely with our reservoir engineering, land, and finance teams to ensure thorough due diligence on acquisitions and optimal management of current assets.

Key Responsibilities

- Evaluate New Acquisition Opportunities

: Identify, screen, and assess the geological potential of prospective oil and gas asset acquisitions across various U.S. onshore basins. Perform regional and local subsurface interpretations to determine reservoir quality, hydrocarbon potential, and development upside of targets

- Geological Data Integration & Interpretation

: Collect, integrate, and interpret diverse subsurface data sets – including well logs, core samples, seismic data, petrophysical analyses, and production histories – to build a comprehensive understanding of each prospect. Prepare basin and field-level maps, cross-sections, and other geological models to support investment decisions.

- Technical Due Diligence

: Participate in A&D (Acquisitions & Divestitures) workflows such as data room evaluations and technical due diligence reviews. Provide insightful geological assessments and risk analyses for potential acquisitions and formulate recommendations for management. Communicate findings through high-quality technical presentations and written reports in a timely manner.

- Asset Dataset Management

: Maintain and update geological databases and data repositories for Ellipsis’s existing asset portfolio. Ensure all well information, formation tops, production data, and other relevant geologic data (across ~1,500 non-operated wells) are accurately captured in Petra and other data management systems. Continuously improving data organization and integrity to support ongoing asset management and reporting.

- Portfolio Analysis & Optimization

: Monitor the geological and production performance of existing assets in Permian, Haynesville, DJ, and other basins. Work with reservoir engineers to analyze trends or anomalies in well performance and reservoir behavior. Identify opportunities for field development, infill drilling, or optimization based on geologic insights, vetting received proposals from our operating partners.

- Cross-Functional Collaboration

: Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary teams – including reservoir engineering, production operations, land, and finance – to integrate geologic evaluations into broader business strategies. Provide geoscience input for reserve assessments, economic models, and development planning. Assist in the smooth integration of newly acquired assets into the company’s portfolio, including transfer of geological knowledge and data.

- Continuous Learning

: Stay abreast of industry trends, new geological research, and technological advancements (e.g. improved mapping techniques, data analytics tools, or software updates). Apply best practices and innovative approaches to the company’s geoscience workflow. Mentor junior geoscience staff or interns as needed and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:

- Education & Experience

: Master’s degree in Geology, Geoscience, or a related field. 5+ years of experience as a geologist in the oil and gas industry, with a track record in subsurface interpretation and field development.

- Technical Proficiency

: Strong skills in geological interpretation and mapping software. Proficiency in Petra is required, including experience building and managing well databases. Familiarity with additional geoscience software (such as IHS Kingdom, Enverus, ArcGIS or other mapping/modelling tools) is expected.

- Subsurface Expertise

: Solid understanding of sedimentology, stratigraphy, and reservoir characterization, especially in unconventional plays. Demonstrated ability to interpret well logs, cross-sections, and seismic data to evaluate reservoir properties and hydrocarbon potential.

- Data Management

: Excellent data management and analytical abilities. Capable of handling large datasets (well data, production history, etc.) with strong attention to detail and accuracy. Experience maintaining up-to-date geological records for multiple assets is essential.

- Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills

: Proven ability to analyze complex geological data and uncertainty, draw conclusions, and make recommendations. Resourceful in solving subsurface challenges and identifying key value drivers or risks in an asset.

- Communication

: Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to craft clear technical reports, maps, and presentation materials for both technical teams and senior management. Comfortable presenting geologic findings and recommendations in meetings.

- Team Collaboration

: Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Organized and self-motivated, with the capacity to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Strong work ethic and professionalism in meeting deadlines and project goals.

Preferred:

- Basins Experience

: Direct experience working in the Permian Basin and/or Haynesville Shale plays. Familiarity with the geologic formations, play history, and development practices in these regions will be a significant advantage.

- Programming/Data Analysis

: Proficiency in data analysis or scripting tools. Ability to use Python (or similar programming languages) to automate data workflows, perform advanced analyses, or visualize data is a strong plus.

- Additional Software

: Experience with other industry software packages (e.g., Spotfire/PowerBI for data visualization), or GIS tools for spatial analysis.

- Business Acumen

: Prior involvement in acquisitions & divestitures (A&D) evaluations or asset valuation projects. Understanding of how geologic analysis impacts economic valuation and development planning.

- Professional Certification

: Professional Geoscientist (P.G.) license or AAPG Certified Petroleum Geologist certification, or working towards such credentials, is a plus (demonstrating commitment to professional development).
