Job Title: Meter Technician – Natural Gas
Department: Customer Infrastructure Location: NTX Reports To: Customer Infrastructure Manager
The Meter Technician is responsible for the safe and accurate installation, inspection, testing, and servicing of gas meters and associated piping systems. This role ensures compliance with company standards, local ordinances, and safety regulations while delivering reliable service to residential customers.
- Meter Installation & Setup
- Verify proper riser installation and meter location.
- Install meters in accessible, ventilated, and protected areas.
- Build meter loops for proper fit and appearance.
- Ensure meters are level and stress-free during installation.
- House Piping & Appliance Inspection
- Inspect house piping for proper installation, venting, and safety.
- Ensure all appliances are connected with valves and flex hoses.
- Cap or plug unused outlets and verify shutoff valves are open before testing.
- Testing & Verification
- Perform leak tests using stand-up pressure or meter dial methods.
- Verify meter and regulator operation, including pressure settings and lock-up simulation.
- Conduct purging procedures in compliance with safety standards.
- Appliance Lighting & Venting
- Light appliances as permitted, ensuring proper combustion and venting.
- Verify flame quality and appliance readiness before leaving the site.
- Disconnect Procedures
- Safely disconnect meters, seal or blind outlets, and document service termination.
- Prevent unauthorized gas entry into customer piping.
- Builder Coordination & Site Readiness
- Ensure builder compliance with meter installation guidelines.
- Confirm site access, attic accessibility, and clearances around meter locations.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in gas utility services or plumbing preferred.
- Knowledge of gas piping systems, appliance connections, and safety protocols.
- Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and procedures.
- Positive attitude, strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to set 7-10 residential meters per day
- Ability to lift to 50 pounds
- Work in various weather conditions and confined spaces.
- Climb attic ladders or crawl spaces as needed
- Must be 21 years of age or over
- Must maintain valid Texas Driver’s license
- Candidates must be able to meet all pre-employment background checks, drug screening and physical requirements as determined necessary by the company
