Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Excavator/Backhoe Operator with a background in shallow utility construction. This role is not about large-scale earthmoving or pipeline work — it requires precision excavation in congested corridors and urban environments, often in close proximity to energized powerlines, live gas mains, and other critical utilities.

Operators will be expected to perform careful, detailed work, support duct bank and pad installations, and work closely with ground crews to maintain the highest levels of safety and quality. Preference will be given to candidates familiar with ENMAX standards and shallow utility construction practices.

Responsibilities

- Excavate for shallow utilities (power, communication, gas) with precision and control in congested rights-of-way.

- Safely operate excavators, backhoes, and related equipment for trenching, duct bank installation, vault/pad setting, and backfilling.

- Perform delicate digging around energized powerlines and live gas lines, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols.

- Load, transport, and unload equipment using truck and trailer as required.

- Assist crews with civil construction tasks when not operating.

- Maintain constant awareness of underground locates, permits, and project drawings.

- Immediately report unsafe conditions or hazards, and participate in toolbox talks and safety meetings.

- Ensure equipment is maintained and job sites remain safe and organized.

Qualifications

- Minimum 2 years’ experience operating excavators/backhoes in shallow utility or underground civil construction.

- Proven experience working around energized powerlines and live gas lines in tight or congested corridors.

- Familiarity with duct work, trenching, base/pad installation, and backfilling in utility environments.

- Valid Class 1 or Class 3 driver’s license with airbrakes endorsement.

- Certified Ground Disturbance (required).

- Ability to read and interpret prints, SLDs, locates, permits, and approvals.

- Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.

- Strong communication skills and a team-oriented mindset.

- ENMAX construction experience is a strong asset.

Schedule

- Full-time, Monday to Friday (10–12 hour shifts)

- Overtime, weekends, and holiday work as project needs require

- Work location: In-person, Calgary and surrounding area
