Position Summary
SM Energy is hiring a jr. to mid-level Environmental Specialist to join our Denver team in support of our Utah asset area. This position will report to the Environmental Manager–Utah. The primary responsibility of this role is air quality compliance, permitting, and technical support for operations. The Specialist will also support broader environmental compliance programs, including water, waste, and reclamation. This role serves as a key contact for both internal and external stakeholders, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills.
The position may be filled as Specialist or Engineer depending on skills and experience.
- Assist with the development of programs and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
- Support management of environmental planning, reporting, and tracking of requirements, including air quality, emissions inventory, Tier II, SPCC, NORM, water/waste management, pollution prevention, reclamation, and remediation.
- Support the preparation and submittal of compliance and emissions reports in accordance with air permits and state/federal regulations.
- Complete air quality permit applications and obtain permits for new or modified facilities.
- Provide training to operations and field personnel regarding compliance requirements, reporting, and recordkeeping.
- Conduct inspections to evaluate compliance with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations.
- Participate in incident investigations, spill remediation, reporting, and corrective action implementation.
- Coordinate and participate with corporate EHS staff in the development of EHS management systems.
- Serve as a liaison with contractors and conduct EHS management system audits.
- Support engineering and field personnel with compliance planning for new and modified processes or operations.
- Monitor operating parameters, review emissions testing results, and respond to agency inquiries.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with operations, engineering, business development, contractors, and regulatory officials.
- Manage third-party contractors, including scheduling, budgets, and performance oversight.
- Lead or support automation and digitization projects that enhance compliance efficiency.
- Promote environmental awareness at all levels of the organization.
- Travel up to 30% (vehicle and air travel anticipated).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Proficient skills and effective use of Microsoft Office applications; Basic knowledge and understanding of Federal, State and Local environmental, health and safety regulations (e.g. EPA, UDEQ, DOGM, BLM, Tribal Lands); Working knowledge of operating procedures and practices; Ability to interface with other departments and outside contractors or regulatory agencies in an effective and professional manner; Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Typical Education: BS degree in environmental science, ecology, chemistry, engineering or related science isrequired.
Typical Experience: Minimum of 3 years of oil and gas environmental compliance experience.
