About the Kemess Mine

Kemess is located in north-central British Columbia, approximately 250 km north of Smithers and 430 km northwest of Prince George, with fly-in access. The property is host to the former Kemess South (KS) Mine, the Kemess Underground (KUG) deposit, and the Kemess East (KE) deposit.

Existing on-site infrastructure includes offices, warehouse, laydowns, maintenance facilities, a 300-person accommodation camp footprint, crushed ore stockpile and reclaim, access and service roads, an airstrip, explosives magazines, and an electrical substation.

Kemess Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About the Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a full-time Environmental Monitor to join our Kemess Mine operations site. As per our Aboriginal Group Monitor Terms of Engagement, this position is currently only available to Tsay Keh Dene Nation and Kwadacha Nation Aboriginal Groups.

This is a camp-based position, with a rotation of 14 days on / 14 days off, with a 12-hour daily schedule.

Reporting to the Senior Environment Coordinator, the Environmental Monitor will be responsible for various related activities to support the overall success of the project.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

- Implement the site Environmental monitoring programs with oversight from the Senior Environmental Coordinator and support from consultants.

- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safe Work Procedures (SWPs) to ensure proper field procedures are adhered to

- Ensure field data (e.g., field sheets and notes) is recorded, scanned, and filed in the appropriate place and in a timely manner

- Ensure water and air samples are handled correctly when in the field, packaged for shipping appropriately, and shipped to achieve prescribed hold times and temperatures

- Complete reconnaissance sampling of potential water quality risks (e.g., seepage, ML/ARD) and any other monitoring tasks outlined in Permits or site monitoring plans

- Ensure the site Water Quality QA/QC program is implemented

- Maintain and calibrate field instruments as set out per site SOP’s and manufacturer recommendations

- Observe wildlife on site and assist with wildlife monitoring programs

- Housekeeping and cleanliness of environment department vehicles and facilities

- Keeping track of sampling supply stock and notifying the Environmental Coordinator when stock needs to be ordered

- Cleaning up and documenting any spills, along with keeping the site spill/incident log up to date

- Implementation of erosion and sediment control best practices and progressive reclamation activities

- Operate pick up trucks, ATVs, snowmobiles, and small engine equipment in a safe manner

- Access monitoring locations via boat or helicopter

- Monitor and maintain water retaining and drainage structures to ensure capacity for runoff

- Provide field support for other environmental monitoring programs and consultants as required

- Respond to and investigate environmental incidents and provide guidance to operators of all departments

- Perform tasks set out in the site Permits and Management Plans such as sampling and inspections of work sites to identify potential impacts and follow up to ensure risks are mitigated

- Support the Environmental Coordinators in compiling data for the purpose of writing reports

- Support in the planning and execution of various environmental initiatives

- Support with general site upkeep as required

- Other related duties and tasks as assigned by the Supervisor

About You

To qualify for this role, a certificate related to environmental monitoring is recommended to be successful in this role. Candidates with a degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Fish and Wildlife, or Environmental Engineering, etc. are preferredPrevious experience in environmental monitoring, the resource sector or industrial environments is considered an asset.

The following skills and experiences will also be critical to successfully performing this role:

- Basic computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

- Attention to detail in data entry, equipment maintenance, and lab work

- Strong communicator who works cooperatively with field staff and management

- Basic knowledge of power equipment, electrical systems, and hand tools

- Valid Canadian Driver's License

- Motivation for on-the-job training and career progression

It is essential that you have a sense of urgency when responding to dam safety and environmental risks on site, with an ongoing interest in personal development and an improved understanding of the regulatory landscape in mining.
