Military Systems Group (MSG) is a US Defense Contractor that designs and manufactures world class weapons mounting solutions for sea, land, and air vehicles for the US Military and our allies around the world. The MSG Engineering Manager is a working manager role with in-office duty at our Nashville, TN facility, designing products and managing a small team of engineers and sometimes, outside contractors. By collaborating on company efforts to serve our customers, this role supports producing the best-in-market weapons mounts and related accessories. The Engineering Manager will actively participate in company strategy sessions as a key member of the Company Management Team.
· Reports to the Director of Sales & Product Development.
· Responsible for the quality and timeliness of the MSG Engineering Department projects / deliverables, and key performance indicators (KPI).
· Rapidly assesses new design requirements, prioritizes effort, and dynamically retasks available resources in conjunction with (ICW) the Director of Sales & Product Development guidance.
· Design (model and draw) weapons mounts and related accessories. Provide direction and assistance to other design engineers, as required.
· Direct, review and approve all designs and revisions emphasizing Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles.
· Work with Manufacturing, Production and Quality Departments as well as outside Suppliers to address technical issues throughout product life cycle.
· Perform Engineering Analysis as required to verify the strength/durability of designs.
· Supervise and/or write test plans and conduct testing required to validate designs. May oversee live fire tests with weapons and ammunition.
· Improve existing products (functionality, cost, weight, strength, durability, etc.).
· Coordinate the development and maintenance of product manuals.
· Manage the Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) and Configuration Management processes.
· Establish (new when needed or the existing) Engineering Department processes and procedures.
· Identify and maintain an annual Engineering budget. Take advantage of market opportunities and make recommendations to deviate from the budget.
· Assist in the recruitment and review of technical personnel.
· Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
· A minimum of 10 years of engineering design experience, and 3 years of managing subordinate engineers.
· Firm understanding of conventional manufacturing processes – especially machining, fabrication, and coatings.
· Strong materials science background including metals, plastics, and composites with emphasis on fatigue/failure modes.
· Proficiency with SolidWorks engineering design software or equivalent software.
· Willingness to support efforts of the company with limited travel.
· Master’s Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
· Knowledge of weapons mount, weapons, Airborne systems, and military vehicle systems.
· SolidWorks Simulation Premium or ANSYS software proficiency preferred.
