Position Summary
We are seeking a dynamic Engineering Department Manager to join our team, reporting directly to the Director of Production. In this pivotal role, you will lead and mentor a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and technicians, driving the successful execution and oversight of critical projects related to DOD submarine platforms and deep submergence systems. Duties And Responsibilities
The Engineering Department Manager reports directly to the Director of Production for the performance of his/her responsibilities, providing structure, leadership and guidance to the Project Engineers, Waterfront Engineers, Planning and Testing Departments, and assumes profit/loss responsibility for those business units.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and mentor a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, test directors, technicians, and support staff, ensuring alignment with project goals, technical objectives, and timelines. Foster a collaborative and high-performance work culture.
Manage engineering, planning and testing for the repair, overhaul, and construction of DOD submarine platforms or deep submergence systems, ensuring project deliverables (e.g. technical documents, analysis, and testing) are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. Collaborate with internal stakeholders and government agencies for project execution and deliverables. Lead and oversee the technical planning work instruction development and processes for Submarine New Construction product manufacturing, ensuring all quality milestones are met, and all technical specifications are properly documented. Provide strategic direction in the technical planning and execution of all submarine related product lines, ensuring that risk assessments, safety measures, and compliance with applicable contract flow-downs are effectively managed and incorporated into the overall development process.
Provide expert technical guidance in areas such as hull integrity, sail systems, torpedo tube systems, propulsion systems, sonar, weapon systems, and other submarine or submergence systems, and/or products/components. Contribute to innovative solutions and improvements to existing systems and processes.
Ensure all engineering projects comply with DOD, DSS-SOC, SUBSAFE standards, safety regulations, and industry best practices. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
Utilize ERP systems like Deltek CostPoint to track project costs, schedules, and resources. Assist in financial forecasting, budgeting, and ensure proper documentation of engineering costs and expenditures.
Act as the primary point of contact for customers, stakeholders, and subcontractors, ensuring effective communication regarding project status, technical issues, and resolution of any concerns.
Identify and mitigate technical and operational risks to ensure smooth project execution. Lead the development of contingency plans and ensure risk factors are appropriately managed and communicated.
