Distribution Engineering Services Job Description
This job posting is for an Engineering position in Alabama Power’s Distribution Engineering Services department. This is an Exempt position that may be filled as an Exempt level 6 or 7 based upon the qualifications and certifications of the successful candidate. This position will be responsible for the design standards and material specifications of the Southern Company distribution overhead, underground, and network systems. This position will evaluate and approve new material and equipment used on the Southern Company distribution system, maintain engineering and construction standards, and assist with developing and facilitating appropriate training for distribution personnel. This position will guide the process and gather input from stakeholders for company policies such as the Distribution Engineering Manual, Rules and Regulations for Electric Service, and Customer Service Procedures. This position will work closely with other organizations such as the Distribution Test Lab which includes testing of equipment, providing technical support for the distribution automation strategy deployment, troubleshooting problems, and failure analysis. The successful candidate will be expected to represent the group by providing technical expertise to field personnel and engaging in discussions about distribution engineering and design at the Southern Company and industry level. The successful candidate is preferred to have an active Professional Engineering license in the State of Alabama or be capable of obtaining licensure. Other duties include storm response and emergency restoration efforts. This position is located at APC Corporate HQ in Birmingham, AL with overnight travel required up to 25% of the time. Alternative work locations are considered on a case-by-case basis and require management approval. Partial relocation benefits may be available for this position.
Job Requirements Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required
Major in Electrical Engineering is preferred
Active PE License in the State of Alabama is preferred
Advanced degree is a plus
Experience Requirements
Minimum 5 Years of Power Delivery Distribution experience
Experience designing Distribution systems with the applied use of technical codes, standards, and regulatory governance (ex: NESC, APC DE Manual, Rules and Regs, etc.)
Experience serving on Southern Company or Industry level committees is desirable
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of Southern Company Distribution Specifications, APC Distribution Engineering Manual, APC Rules and Regulations, and Customer Service Procedures
Knowledge of technical codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (NESC, NEC, etc.)
Knowledge of Southern Company Transmission and Distribution electric system operating practices and procedures
Thorough knowledge of the design, maintenance, and operation of distribution equipment and materials
Possess strong communication and presentation skills to deliver complex and technical information to a variety of internal and external audiences
Excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously with a high degree of efficiency
Excellent analytical and technical problem-solving skills
