We are looking for an Engineer, Rock Mechanics to join our Centerra Corporate team who will provide technical leadership in ground control and geotechnical engineering for mining operations. This position is a hybrid role based at our Toronto, ON office.
The role is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring rock mechanics strategies to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable mine design and operations. The incumbent will work closely with mine planning, operations, and technical services teams to optimize slope stability, underground excavation stability, and waste storage facility performance. The role is expected to include travel up to 50% of the time to operating and project sites providing support and mentorship, with the remaining time in the office performing modelling, analyses and developing standards and procedures.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct rock mass characterization, structural analysis, and geotechnical data interpretation.
- Develop and review geotechnical design criteria for open pit slopes, underground excavations, and surface infrastructure foundations.
- Perform numerical modelling, kinematic analyses, and stability assessments to support mine design and sequencing.
- Design and oversee ground support systems, slope reinforcement, and excavation controls.
- Develop Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), monitoring programs, and ground control management plans.
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate geotechnical risks impacting mine safety and productivity.
- Implement and interpret results from slope monitoring, instrumentation, and ground control systems.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and ground condition assessments.
- Identify and provide recommendations to improve site ground control practices.
- Be a leader to implement improvements.
- Provide technical input during operational decision-making and geotechnical hazard response.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, geologists, and technicians.
- Contribute to training programs on ground control awareness for mine operations staff.
- Support the professional development of the geotechnical team.
- Ensure compliance with corporate standards, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements, where applicable.
- Prepare technical reports, design recommendations, internal procedures and peer reviews for internal and external stakeholders.
- Support reserve reporting and technical disclosures in accordance with NI 43-101.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, or Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical / Rock Mechanics.
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive geotechnical/rock mechanics experience in mining (with majority in open pit) or any acceptable combination of education & experience.
- Field experience as a geotechnical/rock mechanics engineer.
- Demonstrated expertise with geotechnical software (e.g., Rocscience suite, FLAC3D, RS2, SLIDE, Dips, Leapfrog, Deswik, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of rock mass classification systems, ground control techniques, numerical modelling and field programs.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng, Pr.Eng, CPEng, or equivalent) designation or eligibility required.
- Leadership qualities.
- Project management, and/or mentorship experience would be considered an asset.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to influence across multidisciplinary teams.
