This position is located at the Portlands Energy Centre (PEC), in Toronto, Ontario. PEC is a natural gas combined cycle electric generating facility that generates for the Ontario electricity market.

General Information

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Plant Engineering in the Asset Management department, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing plant engineering support in collaboration with operations, maintenance, and corporate support staff to achieve reliable operation and continuous improvement of all plant equipment located at Atura Power’s Portlands Energy Centre.

The PEC Electrical Plant Engineer is the first contact for the plant to access electrical engineering support and provides general troubleshooting / technical support for a wide variety of equipment issues. This role is supported by a co-located Mechanical Plant Engineer and a centrally based team of System Engineers that provide subject matter across all Atura Power’s assets. The Electrical Plant Engineer may also be required to take on system or other discipline engineering responsibility, support to other assets or locations, dependent on resource demands. The successful candidate will be able to think logically, troubleshoot, and collaborate closely with the operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to develop solutions for issues, some of which have never been seen before.


Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Provide day-to-day engineering support to plant operation and maintenance teams including troubleshooting of equipment problems
Analyze and assess equipment condition through review of field test data and other equipment-centred information systems
Perform and direct investigative assessments, equipment root cause failure analysis, develop testing plans, and support equipment restoration activities
Assist in definition and implementation of corrective and preventative maintenance planning for plant equipment and systems based on industry best practices and regulations
Identify risks and mitigations with respect to plant equipment and processes
Collaborate with the Mechanical Plant Engineer and System Engineers to support plant maintenance and operations activities, projects, troubleshooting
Design engineered solutions to solve problems (or solicit internal or external expertise when work is outside core technical capabilities) to meet corporate objectives
Prepare and review calculations, design documents, and specifications, conceptual studies, designs, reports, and proposals to meet project requirements
Initiate comprehensive capital improvement projects that include developing clear definitions of scope, investment valuations of alternatives, cost estimates, schedules, and execution plans
Support projects through review of engineering design documentation from equipment manufacturers and outside consulting firms including drawings, submittals, calculations, reports and other related information
Ensure relevant documentation is retained in accordance with company expectations including: drawings, reference manuals, and other related information
Coordinate or direct the work of external consultants and contractors
Other related duties as required.


Skills and Knowledge:


The qualified candidate will possess the following:

Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to provide and present timely, relevant feedback/reporting to various stakeholders. Candidate will be asked to submit a technical writing sample
Proficient in reading and understanding electrical discipline drawings including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, control logic diagrams, schematics
Familiarity with reading and understanding mechanical discipline drawings including P&IDs, piping isometrics, general arrangements, mechanical system drawings
Working knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, NEC, IEEE standards
Familiarity with NERC standards is an asset
High level of attention to detail
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Good judgment and decision-making abilities
Innovative, self-motivated, professional, and able to work without being under direct supervision and contribute in a fast-paced, multi-discipline team environment
Ability to work independently to organize, plan, coordinate, and manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously including providing daily field support
Ability to exercise leadership without formal authority and have demonstrated leadership skills for delegation, negotiation, influencing, and consensus building to coordinate work
Ability to embrace and lead change
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of PC-based computer systems and software applications with an emphasis on Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
Direct experience (in working environment) with IBM Maximo is an asset
Familiarity with Ontario Technical Standards and Safety Act and Regulations; CSA B51; ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections I, III, IV and VIII; ASME B31.1/B31.3; ASME PCC-1 and -2; National Board Inspection Code, ASHRAE and Cooling Tower Institute codes and standards are considered assets


Education & Experience:


The qualified candidate will possess the following:

Experience with plant SCADA; instrumentation & controls; control systems (DCS, PLC); high-, medium- and low-voltage electrical systems; protection systems
University degree in Electrical Engineering, or comparable discipline, from a program accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board or international equivalent as recognized by the Washington Accord
P. Eng. license with Professional Engineers of Ontario or an equivalent governing body in Canada is required. Individuals eligible but not yet licensed, will also be considered.
Minimum 4 years of progressive relevant field experience in power generation (e.g. new installations, commissioning, operations, and/or maintenance). Previous industrial field service experience will also be considered
Previous hands-on experience at a combined cycle power plant is an asset
Experience working in an industrial plant environment and with a variety of stakeholders including maintenance and operations personnel, engineers, 3rd party contractors

Have and maintain a valid driver's license
Successfully complete a criminal record check
Unrestricted ability to travel, on occasion, within North America. Must be able to travel within Ontario up to approximately 7 days at a time.
