Job Summary: This position is responsible for supervising and monitoring the performance of engineering and Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) in the Electric Production department. This position also performs project management, performance studies, and other tasks related to the operation of electric production equipment.
• Ensure engineering and I&C activities are performed in compliance with all applicable state and federal guidelines, operating permits, and standards.
• Supervise engineering and I&C personnel, fostering a collaborative environment through task assignment, technical support, training, and professional development.
• Oversee the performance of preventative and predictive maintenance of electrical, instrumentation, environmental monitoring, and controls system equipment in alignment with Electric Production’s Asset Management Program.
• Review and approve work orders, equipment histories, requisitions and other records to ensure accurate accounting of labor and materials.
• Collaborate with the operations and maintenance teams to prioritize and implement critical equipment repairs and reliability improvements.
• Assist in the development of records and reports required by regulatory agencies and HBPW operations.
• Prepare annual engineering and I&C budgets in coordination with the Superintendent and oversee financial performance.
• Negotiate and manage contracts for one-off projects as well as long-term services.
• Oversee the Engineering Change Management process and technical documentation storage within the department.
• Oversee the business risk evaluations of Electric Production department assets.
• Assist the Superintendent in the development and implementation of annual capital improvement budget.
• Ensure safety programs and training are implemented by the engineering and I&C team as necessary to meet regulatory requirements and the goals of the department and organization.
• Serve as a backup to the Superintendent and others within the Department.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school (preferably in mechanical, electrical, controls, or chemical), or equivalent education and experience.
• At least four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience involving engineering in a manufacturing, production, or utility setting.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to manage the activities of a diverse team and to foster positive and collaborative interactions with colleagues, vendors, customers, and stakeholders.
• Proficiency in servant leadership principles, fostering a culture of collaboration and support.
• Skill in communicating technical information and providing technical instruction to team members.
• Ability to read and understand detailed drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
• Effective workplace skills as demonstrated through WorkKeys assessments (Workplace Documents – 5, Applied Math – 5, Graphic Literacy – 5).
• Prior supervisory experience in a manufacturing, production, or utility setting.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of operating an electric production facility.
• Experience/familiarity with Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and/or Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
• Experience/familiarity with P&IDs, electrical schematics, ladder logic, process controls, and PID Controllers.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft 365 applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, etc.).
• No certifications are required for this position. However, certification as a Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan and/or as a Project Management Professional (PMP) is preferred.
• Periodic exposure to environmental hazards associated with electrical, mechanical and/or power equipment.
• Mental ability to work on projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent disruptions.
• This position is covered by the HBPW Anti-Drug and Alcohol Misuse Prevention Plan (PHMSA).
