Director/VP of Integrated Resource Planning The Director or VP of Integrated Resource Planning will lead comprehensive planning across supply and load-side resources to optimize energy, capacity, and renewable attributes for Guzman’s diverse customer portfolio within WECC, and support expansion into new regions. This leader will create a strategic plan that balances generation, transmission, and market resources to meet current and future demands of commercial customers while ensuring grid reliability, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance. Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer or the Head of Operations, this position will have a significant influence on company-wide strategy and capital allocation decisions.
Base Compensation: annual salary of $200k-$300k depending on experience, with an additional targeted bonus.
• Develop and maintain long-term integrated resource plans spanning 10-20 year horizons, incorporating supply-side resources (power purchase agreements, generation assets, market purchases) and demand-side resources (behind the meter resources).
• Lead scenario planning and risk assessment to evaluate resource portfolios under varying economic, regulatory, and operational conditions.
• Coordinate with internal operations and trading teams to ensure resource additions align with portfolio capabilities and constraints.
• Coordinate with origination team to understand load growth plans and to ensure current and future resources can support expansion.
• Analyze electricity markets, capacity markets, and renewable energy credit markets to identify optimal procurement strategies.
• Work with the modeling team to understand the interactions, limitations, and costs associated with energy, capacity, and environmental attribute markets.
• Monitor market fundamentals including fuel prices, carbon policies, transmission and market developments, and emerging technologies to inform resource decisions.
• Design resource strategies for customers with varying load profiles and renewable energy goals, and preferences for specific energy products (ie: renewable portfolio standards); work with operations team to integrate renewable energy resources to meet customer demands.
• Develop strategies for managing renewable energy intermittency, grid integration challenges, and renewable energy credit optimization.
• Evaluate emerging technologies (ie: battery storage, green hydrogen, geothermal and advanced grid technologies).
• Ensure resource planning processes comply with state and federal regulations including resource adequacy requirements, renewable portfolio standards, and emissions regulations. Monitor regulatory developments, market changes, and assess impacts on resource planning strategies.
• Work closely with the modeling team to produce a comprehensive financial analysis of resource options including capital costs, operating costs, fuel price risks, and regulatory risks. Work with the modeling, risk, and trading teams to develop hedging strategies to manage commodity price volatility and other market risks.
• Prepare detailed economic justifications for resource investments and procurement decisions.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, or a related field
• 10+ years of experience in electric utility resource planning, energy markets, or related roles.
• Strong understanding of electric power systems, generation technologies, transmission planning, and grid operations.
• Knowledge of wholesale electricity markets including energy, capacity, and ancillary service markets.
• Familiarity with renewable energy technologies and integration challenges.
• Deep understanding of electric utility regulation including integrated resource planning processes, rate-making, and regulatory approval procedures.
• Knowledge of environmental regulations affecting the electric sector including carbon pricing, renewable portfolio standards, and emissions requirements.
• Understanding of competitive retail energy markets and customer choice programs
• Experience with both regulated utility and competitive market environments.
• Proficiency with resource planning software and models such as PLEXOS, or similar platforms.
• Experience with distributed energy resources including rooftop solar, energy storage, and demand response programs.
• Background in energy trading or risk management.
• Knowledge of emerging technologies including electric vehicles, heat pumps, and grid modernization technologies.
