This position reports to the President & COO, and is responsible for directing a broad range of activities that will support one of our company’s four Strategic Anchors: Safety. Responsibilities for this role include identifying major areas of potential risk relating to Health, Safety, Security, Environmental, and overall corporate operations; and establishing a comprehensive risk management and HSSE program that strives to be world-class.
This includes implementing hazard recognition and risk mitigation techniques, managing insurance programs, and ensuring compliance with industry-required rules and regulations. The role requires collaboration with the Executive Team, Board of Directors, and Leadership Teams to ensure established policies and procedures are executed, measured, and reported.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in managing risk and safety programs, negotiating and managing insurance rates and portfolios, supporting incident reporting and environmental remediation, and overseeing compliance in regulated industries. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in the oil industry and/or with captives.
- Establish and maintain a hazard and risk identification framework—including inherent and residual hazards/risks—and design, implement, and manage appropriate operational risk reduction management programs.
- Oversee environmental, safety, and security activities in the areas of convenience stores, bulk plants, fleets, drivers, facilities, and corporate operations.
- Implement companywide and location-specific Accident Prevention Plans, Emergency Action Plans, safety checklists, procedures, and safety training.
- Establish and maintain companywide safety committees and communication of safety programs and goals.
- Develop scorecards to measure safety, compliance, and total cost of risk.
- Research, recommend, and manage vendors/software for contract management, SDS management, safety training, accident reporting, and incident management.
- Work with leadership teams to identify, transfer, mitigate, retain, and finance risks; develop and manage annual safety and insurance budgets.
- Analyze current and potential operations to identify hazards and risks; design scalable, modular processes as the company migrates to common systems and a centralized corporate office.
- Review loss runs (auto, property, liability, workers’ compensation) to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
- Comply with EPCRA Tier I/II, storm water discharge permit reports, OSHA 300 logs, and SPCC reporting requirements.
- Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA/WISHA-DOSH guidelines.
- Develop and manage a corporate risk management program that includes insurance coverage and financing strategies.
- Negotiate and manage insurance rates, claims, and the overall insurance portfolio.
- Monitor and evaluate risk exposures to ensure adequate coverage and optimal program structure.
- Partner with the Board of Directors and Executive Team on strategic risk oversight and reporting.

- BA/BS Degree in Finance, Law, Engineering, or related major. Professional degree preferred.
- 10+ years - experience in Safety, Risk Management or related field(s)- Strong computer skills
- Demonstrated success in working effectively in multi-functional teams.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
- Preference will be given to candidates who have relevant experience with risk and safety of fleets, hydrocarbons and/or plant facilities and underground storage tanks.
- Operates in a professional office environment.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, sit for long periods of times, talk, and hear.
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers, with the ability to reach with hands and arms.
- This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 50 pounds.
