Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

The NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the NWMO selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace as the hosts for the site for a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.

This decision means our office and staff will, in the future, be relocating to Ignace, Ont., and the deep geological repository will be situated in the area of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace. Infrastructure planning and development are underway to support this transition and ensure that both the community and our employees are well served and supported, now and in the future.

Digital Communications Associate

JOB SUMMARY

We are currently seeking an experienced Digital Communications Associate to join our energetic and fast-paced Communications team. Reporting to the Digital Communications Specialist at our Toronto headquarters, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a strong NWMO presence on digital channels including but not limited to the NWMO’s presence and profiles on relevant social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and X. This role would also be responsible for project managing and advising on the production of digital communications materials on social media platforms (copy, videos and imagery) and the measurement of social media activations. A working knowledge of Sitecore website CMS would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

- Maintain a strong NWMO presence on social media platforms. The Associate will be responsible for developing, managing, implementing, and measuring social media communication strategies, guidelines, procedures/protocols and editorial plans. Strategies are sometimes based on confidential information.

- Maintain and grow the NWMOs social media presence and community, managing on-line relationships and mitigating issues and misinformation in the online space. Respond appropriately to social media posts acting on behalf of the organization.

- Align with other Communications Team members (e.g. Media and Communications Manager, Regional Communications Managers, Creative Team etc.) to ensure alignment with internal strategies and approved messages;

- Develop and implement the production of digital communications materials for use on social media platforms and the measurement of social media content interactions, reach and other relevant KPIs and support (as needed) the implementation of related communication plans and analysis.

- Create and manage editorial plans for related communication channels, including, but not limited to, web, social media and e-mail.

- Project manage the production of social media communication material, from content development (writing, editing proofreading, approval, translation) to design, production, printing, distribution, mailing and placement. This would be done in consultation with the required SMEs within the team. Ensure all social media communication materials:

- Are consistent with and help achieve NWMO communications strategies;

- Meet NWMO visual identity requirements;

- Communicate consistent key messages;

- Are appropriately adapted to multiple platforms where required;

- Incorporate current communications best practice; and

- Are appropriate given specialized needs of each target audience

- Co-ordinate with a range of internal and external stakeholders (i.e. communications team members, subject matter experts, graphic designers, photographers, translators, etc.) to ensure each project is produced on time, on budget, and in accordance with NWMO brand standards, style guide, governance procedures and communication strategies. Ensure workback schedules are developed and resources are coordinated and scheduled well in advance to avoid bottlenecks, delays or unnecessary costs.

- Contribute to the development, implementation, management, and measurement of NWMO social media communications strategies.

- Use consistent proactive and reactive messages to support communications strategies, goals and objectives across all digital platforms, and align and integrate appropriately with offline messages.

- Monitor and use analytics to evaluate strategies and to measure impact and plan for future social media content including platforms and targeting approach. Produce reports as required and make recommendations for continuous development and improvement of NWMO’s social media presence.

- Keep up with digital communications trends, new technology and emerging best practices in digital communications and develop strategies to appropriately adapt our activities to drive progress toward the NWMO’s goals.

- Perform other duties as required to support the team.

Qualifications and Experience

- 4 year university degree in communications, public relations or journalism or equivalent.

- Over 4 years’ experience in social media community management and experience developing and implementing measured digital strategies.

- Strong understanding and in-depth knowledge of the major social media platforms’ structure, and social media analysis and backend (settings). This would include META, LinkedIn, X and YouTube.

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working on social media management platforms, preferably Sprout Social, for content scheduling and publishing, monitoring, tagging and reporting.

- Demonstrated ability to craft communications on social media channels.

- Demonstrated experience in developing, writing, and editing content for a variety of communications media including social media and digital ads.

- Have a working knowledge of social media advertising, targeting and measurement on platforms like META, LinkedIn and YouTube. Should be very familiar with the backend and settings of social media platforms for managing settings and privacy.

- Requires experience in corporate communications to contribute to, and support, communications strategies and plans.

- Requires excellent oral and written communications.

- Requires excellent interpersonal, project management and organizational skills.

- Requires proficiency in standard word processing, presentation and desktop publishing applications.

Preferred

Proficient French language skills (written and oral) an asset.

Other Information

Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

Candidates residing in the Greater Toronto Area: Office Location – 22 St. Clair Avenue East until their role is required to relocate.

NWMO currently operates in a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office (Tuesdays being universal) and 2 days working from home.
