The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and inspection of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment used in steel plant operations. This includes trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other heavy machinery. The role ensures all equipment is operating safely and efficiently to support plant productivity.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues in diesel engines and related systems.
- Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, brake inspections, and fluid checks.
- Inspect and test vehicles and equipment to identify problems and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Maintain detailed records of repairs, maintenance schedules, and parts inventory.
- Operate diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot issues.
- Collaborate with other maintenance personnel to prioritize and complete work orders.
- Ensure all repairs are completed in a timely manner to minimize equipment downtime.
- Adhere to safety protocols and environmental regulations during all maintenance activities.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in diesel mechanics or automotive technology preferred.
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in diesel engine repair, preferably in an industrial or plant setting.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair instructions.
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Exposure to loud noise, heavy machinery, and diesel fumes.
- Requires physical strength and stamina to lift heavy parts and work in confined spaces.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots is mandatory.
- May require overtime or weekend work depending on plant needs.
