- Maintain, diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul fleet vehicles.
- Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
- Align front ends and suspension systems.
- Attach test instruments to equipment and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
- Diagnose and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems.
- Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, transmissions, clutches, and differential units.
- Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
- Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
- Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
- Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery, such as pumps and compressors.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, or pressure gauges.
- Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing auxiliary systems related to diesel engines, such as air brakes, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Performing welding and fabrication tasks to repair or modify components or structures, such as engine mounts, brackets, or exhaust systems.
- Install or repair accessories.
- Operate valve-grinding machines to grind and reset valves.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
- Raise trucks and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
- Rebuild gas or diesel engines.
- Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
- Repair or adjust seats, doors, or windows.
- Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
- Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.
- Test drive trucks to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
- Adhering to safety protocols and ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory standards while performing repair and maintenance tasks.
- Maintaining accurate records of repairs, services performed, and parts used. May also order necessary parts and supplies.
- Assisting and providing guidance to junior mechanics or apprentices in developing their skills and knowledge in diesel engine maintenance and repair.
- Equipment and Tool Maintenance: Ensuring that all tools, equipment, and machinery are properly maintained, calibrated, and in good working condition.

- To work in an environment that often smells musty, putrid, or rancid
- To potentially work in an environment that has seasonally high heat or low temperatures due to being outdoors
