Discovery Natural Resources LLC is a domestic, onshore exploration and production company with over 1,000 wells in operation in Texas.
The Development and Planning Engineer will work closely with Geology, Operations, Finance, and other disciplines to innovate and optimize asset development, leveraging data-driven approaches to enhance reservoir performance and support operational excellence.
Primary Responsibilities
•Demonstrate a commitment to safety, environmental compliance, and the Discovery Core Values in all aspects of the job.
•Develop and maintain field development models using Enersight to forecast production profiles.
•Conduct detailed economic analyses of opportunities using ARIES to assess project viability and optimize capital allocation.
•Coordinate closely with all stakeholders to accurately prepare and analyze short-term and long-term development plans, annual budget forecasts, and other production, cost, and cash flow projections.
•Provide recommendations for optimizing development plans and project schedules while ensuring that risks and associated variables are identified, assessed, and highlighted in proposals, emphasizing critical activities and constraints for management. Provide technical and engineering analysis to support business case development and strategic decision-making.
•Lead monthly outlook processes and drive continuous improvement to increase efficiency in planning-related activities.
•Collaborate with operations to understand key variances in production, lease operating expenses, and capital expenses related to budgets and forecasts. Conduct reserves studies for budgeting and forecasting purposes.
•Generate visualizations and reports using Spotfire to communicate effectively and create dynamic dashboards for stakeholders.
•Provide technical advice to management, offering insights into best practices, emerging trends, and risk mitigation. Stay updated on industry best practices and recommend innovative strategies.
•Lead the engineering evaluation of acquisitions, divestitures, and/or trades arising from both internally generated and third-party deal flow. Calculate well EURs, determine well spacing, generate type curves, and make acquisition and/or development recommendations based on the company’s return metrics.
•Analyze reserves and the value of potential acquisitions, divestitures, and trades while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to execute on acquisition and divestiture (A&D) strategies. Review LOS, LOE, OPEX, differentials, and other economic assumptions related to acquisition opportunities.
•Track investments’ technical performance and report updates to management, utilizing ARIES for technical underwriting, economic modeling, cash flow analysis, and decision-making support for acquisition and divestiture transactions.
•Conduct screening and feasibility studies on existing assets, potential acquisitions, and asset divestitures, making recommendations based on the findings. Analyze development strategies and industry trends to identify potential growth opportunities.
•Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop technical evaluation materials to present to executive management.
•Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and fostering personal development.
Education and Experience
•Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering or a related field
•Minimum of 5 years of experience in reservoir engineering with a focus on planning and development
•Experience with a variety of unconventional resource plays and development
•Permian Basin experience preferred

Compensation and Benefits
•Estimated pay range: $150,000 – $205,000 (depending upon experience of the successful candidate)

Most of the job is done in an office setting. Field travel required 10–15%; adverse weather conditions may exist. Variable work hours including nights and weekends.
