Weber Basin Water Conservancy District is Northern Utah’s Regional Water Supplier for: treated municipal water, wholesale irrigation water, retail secondary irrigation water, untreated industrial water and groundwater replacement water. The Construction Mechanic performs general fleet vehicle, support equipment, and heavy equipment service, repair, and maintenance, directly performs and assists field crews, as necessary, with the maintenance of District general facilities, infrastructure, and supporting equipment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (The education and experience requirements for this job may be satisfied by any acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.)
Education: High school graduation or equivalent with completed courses in automobile maintenance and repair and basic industrial arts. Must have (or be able to obtain within three months of hire) a Class A CDL. Preference will be given towards individuals with ASE Master Technician status as well as certification(s) towards ASE Diesel Mechanic status or comparable.
Experience: At least one year of experience in mechanical repair of general automotive fleet vehicles and heavy equipment of varying sizing, capacities, and configurations, or two years of highly concentrated technical school training plus at least one year of experience. Skilled in the use of basic mechanical and auto mechanic tools, gauges, diagnostic software, meters, and hand tools; skilled in the use of welding equipment.
Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the specialized and general tools, used in vehicle maintenance; considerable knowledge of the design, adjustment, operating maintenance and repair of a variety of diesel and gas powered automotive, light and medium and ground maintenance equipment; considerable knowledge of gauges and other instrumentation; knowledge of proper auto body repairs and painting methods.
Skills Prioritize repairs and workload. Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with equipment and vehicles using information from others, manuals, diagnostic tools, and past experience. Proficient, familiar, and skilled with stick and wire feed welding procedures and practices as necessary to support core job functions.
Abilities: Ability to diagnose complex mechanical problems and defects and to determine parts and adjustments necessary to repair vehicles and related equipment; ability to read and interpret technical manuals; ability to overhaul small motors and engines; ability to keep accurate records of work performed on vehicles; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to work effectively with other District personnel.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to performing required job functions. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and critical thinking. Daily local travel required in normal course of job performance.
