Position Overview: The Interior Gas Utility (IGU) is seeking an experienced manager to lead and direct customer service, marketing, and public relations at our expanding public natural gas utility in Interior Alaska. This role is instrumental in developing and implementing IGU's conversion, customer acquisition strategy, and public relations efforts, while overseeing the outreach process. Established in 2012, IGU is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors. The successful candidate will report to the General Manager.

Essential Functions:
•Hire, direct, and supervise business development/marketing, and customer service staff. The current organizational structure includes two customer service staff and one business development/marketing position.
•Generate leads and ensure customer growth numbers align with IGU proforma and board-established goals.
•Proactively communicate with potential customers to solicit new business.
•Manage IGU website, social media presence, and public relations initiatives.
•Create presentations, packets, forms, applications, and other documents as needed to support IGU business.
•Oversee marketing, branding, advertising campaigns, and public relations activities.
•Organize and manage IGU open houses, townhall meetings, contractor events, and other IGU-sponsored events and activities.
•Develop and implement public relations strategies to enhance IGU's image and manage its reputation.
•Coordinate media relations, including writing press releases, arranging interviews, preparing spokespersons for public statements, or independently delivering those statements as authorized by the General Manager.
•Monitor media coverage and public opinion, addressing any issues or concerns that arise.
•Report monthly to the Board of Directors.
•Develop and manage departmental budgets.
•Establish and maintain cooperative, productive relationships with customers, the public, and media outlets.
•Establish and maintain relationships with state and local officials, keeping them informed of IGU priorities and accomplishments.
•Collaborate with mechanical contractors, suppliers, lenders, Fairbanks North Star
•Borough departments, Alaska DEC, and others to ensure community preparedness to support natural gas customers.
•Ensure compliance with PHMSA public awareness requirements.
•Manage IGU participation in independent or collaborative grant applications.
•Manage IGU’s presence at trade shows, fairs, and other community events.
Physical Requirements and Potential Hazards:
•Frequent sitting and standing; use of hands or fingers; talking and hearing.
•Occasional reaching with hands and arms and lifting up to 25 pounds.
•Frequent reading and communication through speech and writing.
•Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Technology, Equipment, Systems, and Tools:
•Advanced skills in word processing, presentation software, and spreadsheets.
•Basic skills with email and general office equipment.
Critical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•Ability to respond appropriately, in IGU’s best interests, to a wide spectrum of customer inquiries.
•Ability to quickly learn and understand IGU’s new customer processes, from application to turn on, and ability to train new staff as needed in those processes or independently perform them in customer service staff’s absences.
•Ability to simplify complex, technical information for general understanding.
•Strong interpersonal skills to develop professional and positive working relationships.
•Proficiency in writing and delivering speeches, talking points, and PowerPoint presentations.
•Ability to anticipate communication needs, analyze issues, develop strategies, and direct responses.
•Research skills to identify funding sources for customer conversion to natural gas, including interaction with state and federal agencies and local lenders.
•Ability to apply for or coordinate grant, loan, and funding applications to support customer conversions.
•Expertise in managing public relations efforts, including media relations, crisis management, and reputation management.
•Strong understanding of public relations principles and best practices.
Desired Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field preferred.
•Minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role.
•Experience in program development and management, grant writing, and funds acquisition preferred.
•Strong public outreach, customer relations, and public relations experience.
•Basic understanding of energy systems mechanics preferred.
•Experience with customer-oriented critical problem solving.
•Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
