Job Description: Note:
The start date for this position is May 2026. The length of the term is 12 months until August 2027.
An opportunity currently exists for a Co-Op/Internship student on the Operational Engineering team within the Operations organization at AltaLink's Calgary office. Reporting to the Manager, Operational Engineering, the successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team responsible for supporting issues on AltaLink's transmission facilities in Alberta, which range in voltage class from 69kV to 500kV. The successful candidate will be providing support in one or more of the technical sub-groups such as transmission lines, civil, substations, SCADA, protection and control (P&C), and compliance.
Responsibilities:
- Liaise with internal and external customers to address issues and concerns.
- Understand and communicate AltaLink's requirements and standards with Third parties, especially those who are contemplating work which is in proximity of, crosses, or encroaches on AltaLink's facilities
- Support root cause failure analysis (RCFA) investigation, analysis, trending, and reporting on equipment failures and saves.
- Provide engineering support on requests related to AltaLink's power system assets across the transmission line, civil, substation, protection & control, or SCADA disciplines. Requests come from internal engineering teams, field staff, other utilities, and customers.
- Provide analysis of existing assists for system performance enhancements and recommended standards changes and upgrades.
- Review equipment manuals to develop optimized maintenance plans for substation assets
- Provide engineering design or study support on the emergency response to asset failures.
- Support the gathering of evidence required to demonstrate compliance to internal and external compliance frameworks such as Alberta Reliability Standards and ISO 27001/19
- All candidates must demonstrate key behaviors and meet identified expectations outlined in our four cultural pillars - one team, continuous improvement, customer focus and personal accountability
- An Electrical Engineering student (ideally specializing in power systems) who has completed two or more years of study and is enrolled in a Co-Op/Internship program at a recognized University
- Knowledge of electrical transmission facilities (substations, civil, lines, P&C and SCADA) would be an asset
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills
- Experience with Microsoft Office: TEAMS, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communications skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes
- Proven track record of good attendance and job performance.
