At SA Recycling Safety is our number one priority for this position. This heavy equipment hauler is responsible for operating a Class A commercial vehicle with a lowboy, RGN, or other specialized trailer to transport heavy construction equipment, materials, and other oversized cargo. The role requires a strong dedication to safety, adherence to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and the ability to load, secure, and unload equipment safely. Drivers must conduct themselves professionally when dealing with customers and their employees. They follow all DOT Regulations, in-yard rules for driving in close quarters and all traffic controllers. Must wear seat belts at all times while driving and be visible on camera at all times.
- Safe equipment transportation: Transport heavy machinery, such as excavators, bulldozers, and loaders, to and from various job sites.
- Proper loading and unloading: Operate a variety of heavy machinery to self-load and unload equipment onto trailers, and use correct securing techniques with chains, binders, and other equipment.
- Pre- and post-trip inspections: Conduct daily safety inspections of the truck, trailer, and all related equipment and document any defects.
- Compliance and record-keeping: Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation laws, including hours of service regulations. Maintain accurate logbooks and other required paperwork.
- Route planning: Plan optimal routes for oversized loads, taking into account height, weight limits, and road restrictions.
- Communication: Communicate effectively with dispatchers, supervisors, and site managers to coordinate delivery schedules and provide status updates.
- Vehicle maintenance: Perform basic maintenance on the truck and report any major mechanical issues to the fleet department.
- Adapt to conditions: Demonstrate flexibility by adapting to changing weather, traffic, and delivery schedules
- Valid CDL: Possess an unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Driving record: Maintain a clean driving record with a focus on safe operation.
- Experience: Have verifiable, proven experience in heavy haul trucking, particularly with lowboys or other specialized trailers.
- Regulations knowledge: Have a strong understanding of DOT regulations, including how they apply to heavy and oversized loads.
- Technical skills: Be proficient in loading and securing heavy equipment and using GPS or other logistical software.
- Communication: Exhibit strong communication and organizational skills.
- Problem-solving: Demonstrate the ability to handle unexpected situations, such as traffic or weather delays.
- Physical fitness: Possess the physical stamina to perform demanding tasks like climbing, lifting, and securing cargo.
- Endorsements: Hazmat and tanker endorsements may be preferred by some employers.
- Must pass a medical DOT physical and DOT drug test
- Must pass a background check
- Preferred – high school diploma or GED and/or foreign education acceptable
- 3 Years as a Valid CDL Class A driver required and registered with the Clearing House. No Restrictions, 10 speed manual require
- Ability to: communicate with others effectively; understand direction (written or oral) and use basic math skills as the job demands
