Supports the integrity and transparency of the electric cooperative’s financial and operational activities by evaluating the accuracy, compliance, and effectiveness of the electric cooperative’s financial records, internal controls, and accounting practices. This position helps safeguard cooperative assets, ensure regulatory compliance (including RUS and FERC), and support strong governance through risk-based audits and financial analysis.

- Perform audits of accounting systems and processes including accounts payable, general ledger, payroll, capital project accounting, inventory, and fixed assets.
- Evaluate internal controls and accounting procedures to ensure compliance with RUS, FERC, GAAP, and cooperative policies.
- Conduct audits related to revenue billing, member payments, and financial reporting accuracy.
- Review utility-specific financial practices, including rate structures, capital project accounting, depreciation, and regulatory cost recovery mechanisms.
- Prepare audit reports detailing findings, risks, and recommendations for improvement, present results to senior management and the Audit Committee.
- Collaborate with departments across the cooperative to resolve audit findings and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Assist with risk assessments and the development of the annual internal audit plan.
- Support external audits, regulatory reviews, annual reporting, and support special investigations as needed.
- Stay up to date with electric cooperative regulations, RUS guidelines, and industry best practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 5+ years of accounting or internal auditing experience.- Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal control principles.
- Excellent Analytical, communication, and report-writing skills.
- Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency in Excel and data analysis: experience with financial and CIS systems. (e.g., NISC, SEDC, SAP).
- CPA, CIA, or CISA (or working toward certification).
- Experience working in/with the utility environment or electric cooperative accounting.
- Familiarity with RUS accounting requirements, NRECA guidance, or cooperative governance.
- Understanding of enterprise risk management (ERM) and regulatory compliance in the electric utility sector.
- Demonstrated ability to function independently in a multi-task environment, as well as part of a team.
- Demonstrated knowledge of all company policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and mathematical skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency with general computer operation, Microsoft Office applications, and accounting systems.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with all levels within the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate and meet rapidly changing customer and business needs by quickly refocusing and realigning strategic and operational direction.
- Demonstrated time management, detail orientation, and organizational skills.
