Company Overview
Chu Cho Industries LP (CCI) is a leading resource and heavy construction company specializing in the forestry, mining, and transportation industries. Based in Mackenzie, BC, we focus on timber harvesting, road construction, maintenance, and the operation of resource camps.
We are looking for a Water Truck Operator to join our team to help complete a construction project in the Tsay Keh Dene area. The Water Truck Operator play a vital role in controlling dust and providing water for earthworks and concrete operations. This operator drives a large tank truck and ensures water is safely and efficiently delivered wherever needed on the construction site.
Position Summary
Responsibilities
•Operate and drive the water truck to transport and distribute water on-site for various construction activities (e.g. dust suppression and soil compaction). This includes navigating rough terrain and adhering to site speed limits and safety protocols.
•Spray water over work areas and haul roads to suppress dust, improving air quality and visibility for workers. Proper dust control is critical on earthworks projects to protect worker health and maintain a safe environment.
•Moisten soils for compaction by applying water as directed to achieve optimal moisture content, which helps attain the required soil density for stable foundations. This supports earthworks quality by ensuring compacted fills and subgrades are properly conditioned.
•Assist with other water-related needs on site, such as damping down stockpiles, supporting concrete work (e.g., curing or cleaning), and general road maintenance (keeping dirt roads from becoming too dusty or loose).
•Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the truck, including checking fluid levels, brakes, lights, tires, and the water tank/pump/hose system. Ensure the vehicle is safe and operational before and after each shift.
•Monitor water tank levels and refill as needed to meet daily project requirements. Keep track of water usage and make timely trips to water sources so that dust suppression schedules can be maintained without interruption.
•Follow environmental regulations for water usage and runoff control. Apply only the necessary amount of water to avoid excessive mud or erosion, and ensure no contamination of waterways (in compliance with environmental guidelines).
•Coordinate with site supervisors and crew members to prioritize areas that need watering. Communicate via radio or hand signals when entering work zones, and remain alert to other heavy equipment to avoid conflicts or unsafe conditions.
•Maintain detailed logs of water truck operations, including the volume of water distributed, locations watered, and any maintenance or incidents. Accurate record-keeping enables the project to track dust control measures and vehicle maintenance.
Qualifications
•Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement (required for operating heavy trucks with air brakes). A higher-class license (Class 1) is an asset, but Class 3 w/ air is the minimum for a water truck.
•Clean driving record and a demonstrated commitment to safe driving practices. The operator must have a history of responsible vehicle operation due to the size and importance of the water truck.
•Experience operating water trucks or similar heavy trucks in a construction, mining, or industrial setting. Prior experience is preferred to handle the challenges of off-road driving and water spraying operations effectively.
•Safety training and certifications, such as basic first aid and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), or a general construction safety orientation. Knowledge of safety protocols ensures the operator can work safely around crews and hazardous areas while handling water (which can create slippery conditions if mismanaged).
•Mechanical aptitude for performing minor maintenance and troubleshooting on the truck. The operator should be able to prime pumps, replace hoses, or address minor mechanical issues, and report any larger issues to the maintenance team.
•Physical fitness and stamina to work in demanding outdoor conditions. The role involves climbing on the truck, dragging heavy hoses, and working in all weather (rain, heat, cold), so the operator must be physically capable of these tasks.
•Excellent communication and teamwork skills. The operator must coordinate with the site foreman and other equipment operators (e.g. notifying when an area is watered or if water supply is low) and possibly guide or direct laborers assisting with hoses. Being a team player ensures water distribution aligns with the crew’s workflow.
Skills
•Proficient heavy truck operation – skilled at driving and maneuvering large trucks on uneven construction terrain and in tight areas. This includes backing up safely to water fill stations or into work zones, and controlling the vehicle’s speed and stability when the tank is full.
•Water spraying technique – ability to operate the truck’s pumping and spraying mechanisms to evenly distribute water. This skill includes adjusting spray nozzles or pressure to cover roads and earth surfaces effectively without wasting water or causing flooding.
•Attention to safety and surroundings – keen awareness to avoid hazards while driving near workers and other equipment. A Water Truck Operator must constantly watch for obstacles, people on foot, and changes in road conditions due to water (e.g. creating muddy spots) and adjust accordingly.
•Time management – effectively schedules watering cycles to cover all required areas and maintains the frequency of passes to keep dust down. They must manage time to refill water and return to critical zones before dust becomes an issue again.
•Record-keeping and reporting – ability to accurately fill out log books or digital records for maintenance checks and water usage. This administrative skill ensures regulatory compliance and helps the project monitor how water is being used on site.
•Adaptability – flexibility to respond to changing site needs. For example, if an unexpected dust issue arises or a specific area dries out faster, the operator can adjust their routine. They should also be prepared to assist with other tasks momentarily if the truck is not in use, provided it doesn’t interfere with first aid response times (if they hold additional roles).
We thank all those who apply, however only selected candidates will be contacted to proceed in the recruitment process.
