Enjoy working outdoors? Hate sitting behind a desk?
If you take pleasure in practical tasks, enjoy outdoor environments, and seek variety in your work throughout the year, this position is perfect for you.
At the Grey Eagle Mine site in Happy Camp, California, you won’t just maintain the water treatment plant—you’ll be part of a tight-knit team that keeps the entire site operating safely and efficiently. From operating heavy equipment to managing environmental systems, every day will bring variety, purpose, and the satisfaction of real results.
The role in a nutshell
As part of a small team supporting the operations, maintenance, and surveillance of the closed site, you’ll play a key role in keeping things running smoothly. Your main focus will be operating the water treatment plant, associated pump stations, and the dewatering basin. Depending on your qualifications, you will supervise or organize preventive maintenance on site infrastructure. You’ll also support environmental and site management systems and help identify, assess, and reduce potential risks.
More specifically, you will be expected to:
•Operate and maintain the water treatment plant and dewatering basin, following standard operating procedures to ensure efficiency and compliance with environmental regulations;
•Conduct environmental sampling (surface and groundwater), calibrate instruments (e.g., pH probes, turbidity meters), and perform regular site checks per permit requirements;
•Monitor site infrastructure such as dams, ponds, roads, and power lines, reporting any deficiencies and supporting appropriate remedial actions;
•Lead and coordinate preventative maintenance on mobile equipment, water treatment systems, electrical and mechanical infrastructure, and tools listed in maintenance registers;
•Oversee contractor activities, including planning, supervision, safety inductions, pre-job safety meetings, permit management, and ensuring adherence to Glencore’s safety and environmental standards;
•Ensure safety and regulatory compliance, including adherence to SafeWork and Cornerstone requirements, safety inspections, and use of SiteDocs for documentation;
•Perform grounds and facilities maintenance, such as vegetation control, snow/ice removal, and general housekeeping of buildings and site areas;
•Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to optimize water treatment efficiency and reporting on completed work and safety documentation;
•Conduct regular inspections and reporting, including safety equipment checks, sampling schedules (daily to annual), and weekly operational updates;
•Contribute to the implementation and upkeep of environmental and site management systems, and assist in assessing and mitigating operational risks.
Do you have what it takes?
•High school diploma required; a technical trade background (mechanical or electrical) is beneficial;
•Minimum 3 years of experience in mining, industrial, or water treatment environments, with solid knowledge of plumbing, mechanical systems, and heavy equipment (e.g., skid steer, forklift, backhoe);
•Strong understanding of health and safety practices and ability to collaborate effectively within a team;
•Capable of working safely at a remote site and outdoors in all weather conditions; must be physically fit for daily manual labor;
•Willingness to work the late shift (12:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.) for at least six months per year;
•Skilled in planning, scheduling, and organization, with effective oral and written communication abilities;
•Comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and smartphones for documentation and communication;
