We have a great opportunity to join our Water Supply team as an Operator within our Rural South team and help us deliver high-quality drinking water to our customers.
The successful candidate will be based in Wear Valley and may also support activities across the Rural North and Water Supply South operating group if needed. This role includes full training to help the candidate master various technical aspects, so we're looking for someone with transferable skills who can grow into this position. We value professional development and offer ample training and growth opportunities within our organisation.
Key responsibilities include performing operational duties on the 17 Rural South reservoirs and the Kielder Transfer system from Riding Mill PS to the Tees area, conducting routine reservoir surveillance and monitoring, and recording levels and data to aid decision-making. You will collaborate with the Reservoir Safety Team for scheduled inspections, including medium risk confined space entry and manual operation of safety-critical valves. This also involves controlled discharges of raw water to the environment, which are monitored and regulated, with training in the use of monitoring equipment provided.
Another primary objective of the role is to optimise raw water supplies to ensure a reliable supply to our WTW, involving level and demand monitoring, close liaison with WTW teams, and reactive valve operations. Additional duties include routine maintenance tasks, groundwork, minor mechanical maintenance, and lubrication. You'll also be required to drive and operate mechanical equipment such as mini diggers, off-road vehicles, quad bikes, chainsaws, etc., with full training provided.
The work is primarily outdoors, so the successful candidate must be willing to work in all weather conditions, as the reservoirs are in exposed locations. You may also support process unit cleaning, site general maintenance, and cleaning tasks, including cleaning tanks to remove waste material.
Communication is essential in this role therefore we seek someone who is an excellent communicator, both verbally and written. You will be a good problem-solver allowing you to respond quickly to issues, understand the problem, and identify the best solution.
We are looking for a team player who is adaptable to meet a varied workload and someone who is also comfortable working alone and outdoors with minimal supervision.
We’re committed to ensuring “Everyone Home Safe Everyday” therefore awareness of health and safety is essential.
You may have experience operating production processes including various mechanical and electrical equipment. This may include experience of using instrumentation to validate and calibrate a process which, is desirable but not essential.
If you are practical, pragmatic and enjoy hands-on problem solving then this could be a great role for you. Please note a full vails manual driving licence is essential.
