Wastewater systems operator reports to the West Jackson County Land Treatment Facility on Seaman Road in Ocean Springs, Ms. Operators work shall include monitoring, maintaining, and trouble-shooting the wastewater treatment and transmission systems. The operator shall be responsible for the technical aspects of the systems operation and compliance with regulatory requirements including Mississippi Pollution Control Law, Section 49-17-1, EPA's Regulation 40 CFR Part 125 and 40 CFR Part 503.
The West Jackson County Land Treatment Facility and Transmission System is comprised of eighteen pumping stations, lagoon with constructed wetlands treatment, no-discharge spray irrigation systems, disinfection of point source discharge, and land application of sludge from the other Authority owned treatment facilities.
· Monitoring treatment and transmission system equipment for unusual conditions or irregularities of performance;
· Monitoring vegetation related to the constructed wetlands and land application process;
· Monitoring water quality and the biological process within the transmission and treatment system for unusual conditions;
· Inspection and reporting of treatment and transmission system conditions on routine checklist and data logs for review by supervisor;
· Performing operational corrective actions to pump stations, motors, blowers, chemical feed systems, and level control structures within the facility and treatment system at the direction of a supervisor;
· Operate farm equipment, sludge spreading equipment, lawn equipment, and Authority owned vehicles at the direction of a supervisor;
· All work shall be completed in accordance with the standard operating procedures established by the Jackson County Utility Authority.
Treatment facility is manned 7 days per week and work task may include after-hours emergency call- out.
Experience shall include principles and practices of wastewater treatment plant and transmission system operations. Knowledge should include but not be limited to the following:
· Principles of operating valves, pumps, motors and controls;
· Principles and methods of bacteriological and chemical analyses;
· Effects and problems of industrial waste in wastewater treatment processes;
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools employed in hay farming and field preparation operations are desired.
1. Must be a high school graduate (GED acceptable).
2. Must be employed a minimum of six (6) months before requesting to apply for the Volume I, Operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants correspondence course and must successfully complete the course within the six (6) months allotted time for completion.
3. Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL within eight (8) months of employment.
4. Must be able to work varied working hours.
5. Must be able to operate heavy farm equipment, operate valves, and work with hand tools for extended periods.
6. Must be able to work with chemicals such as chlorine, HTH, Sulfur Dioxide.
7. Must be able to continuously lift and carry heavy loads.
8. Must be able to continuously walk and climb stairs.
9. Must be able to continuously perform heavy physical labor.
10. Must be able to work in confined spaces
11. Must be able to wear SCBA breathing apparatus.
12. Must be able to work with herbicides and pesticides.
13. Must be insurable on the Authority's auto insurance policy.
14. Must maintain a residence which allows a reasonable response time.
