REPORTS TO: SUPERINTENDANT, LINE & METER OPERATIONS
Under the general direction of the Superintendent, Line & Meter Operations, this position is responsible for the development and implementation of the field worker technical training programs, global safety training programs, Safe Work Practices, and other technical training materials. This person will provide technical guidance and hands on training opportunities for line worker apprentices and provides oversight and direction for line worker refresher training. He/she will be responsible for meter service worker training and support training programs for other technical areas of the business. He/she will work with other departmental leads to identify and correct safety related training gaps. This position instructs and coaches employees to work safely and within Company work procedures and safety manual requirements.
- Oversees the field technical training programs and other safety related trainings. Provides hands on line worker skills-based training to ensure competency through the development and implementation of the Versant Power Competency Based Training and Testing program (CBTT).
- Responsible for the development and oversight of refresher training programs for field workers.
- Participate in the line worker hiring process through the interview and hiring process, providing input and recommendations. Leads the pre-hire competency assessment process.
- Provides guidance for safety training efforts in other parts of the business.
- Oversees the apprentice line worker progression process and provides approval for the step advancements within our progression documents. Ensure all training documentation requirements are met and recorded. Coordinates and ensures that required hands on training opportunities for in- field work situations are available. Works closely with line supervisors to meet this requirement.
- Ensures apprentice training logs are maintained and current and that required exposure hours are met.
- Assists training in other departments such as PST, Fleet, Stockroom, etc., as requested/needed.
- Participates in root cause analysis investigations and serves as a subject matter expert for the development of corrective actions.
- Leads identification of appropriate competency-based training and testing programs to ensure best practices are maintained.
- Participates/leads in the company switching and tagging team, line leadership team, line safety team, employee safety team.
- Responsible for the development of external partnerships regarding safety technical training, including other utilities, Kennebec Valley Community College, SLTC, etc.
- Remaining knowledgeable about all Company policies. Maintaining a high degree of professional conduct.
- Identifying employees’ strengths and gaps, along with providing developmental opportunities to advance strengths and bridge gaps;
- Works in accordance with the documented environmental procedures, instructions, and specific responsibilities as defined in individual procedures and instructions. Reports problems or deviations associated with environmental issues and the Environmental Management System (EMS) to the Environmental Department.
Other related duties as assigned, including designated duties associated with System Restoration.
REQUIRED OR PREFERRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Associate’s degree in Electrical Power and/or equivalent experience in the electrical utility industry preferred, or, a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent.
- Line Work experience in an electric utility is required
- Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, FMCSA, and NESC regulations with an understanding of the principles of loss control management.
- Recognized as a safety leader and knowledgeable of all Versant Power safety rules, safe work practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Motivating employees to accept change and to support Company initiative
- Strong skills in project management, coordination, organization, and facilitation required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Publisher, and Power Point with ability to acquire addition computer software skills.
- Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) certification preferred.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment required, including the Employee Safety Team, Line Leadership team, Switching and Tagging team, and PST leaders.
- Ability to work independently required.
- Experience working with a unionized workforce preferred.
- Valid Maine driver’s Class A license required.
- Position is requires sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, reaching, and driving.
- Position requires excellent verbal and written communication.
- Position requires concentration and strong organizational skills
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Irregular hours and occasional overnight travel required.
