HRSD’s apprenticeship programs are a combination of on-the-job training and related classroom instruction. All can be completed in three or four years. You must be willing to work your scheduled shift and attend class during working hours. A Math Skills Assessment Test is required prior to entry into HRSD's Apprenticeship Program. This position qualifies for a $2,000 sign on bonus, $1,000 is paid at hire, and the remaining $1,000 is paid upon successful completion of the 6-month probationary period. Work center is located in West Point, Virginia and the schedule is Monday-Thursday from 6:00AM to 4:30PM, or Tuesday-Friday from 6:00AM to 4:30PM depending on work center needs. This position does require candidates to be apart of a rotating standby on-call and weekend shift schedule.
Under Broad Guidance, The Systems Operator Is Responsible For
Operating, maintaining, controlling, and repairing sewage treatment facilities under general supervision. Supervising assistants in the servicing and repair of sewer mains & appurtenances; servicing and maintaining pumping stations; performing involved and difficult maintenance and repair on collection system force mains, gravity mains and pump stations. Performing other assignments as required. This position works under the direction of the Lead Operators or Systems Foreman's.
High school diploma or GED and completion of HRSD’s Apprenticeship program for this trade, or equivalent, as determined by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee
Completion of the On-The-Job-Training portion of HRSD's Apprenticeship program for this trade, or approved equivalent as determined by HRSD’s Apprenticeship Committee.
Experience in construction/repair of sewer lines; operation and maintenance of wastewater collections systems and pump stations; experience in general construction trades, including concrete work, carpentry, earth work, construction, welding and steel work; familiarity with and ability to operate heavy construction equipment, to include supervisory skills.
This position is fully qualified at Grade 5, with experience and education as noted above, a Virginia Class I Wastewater Works Operator's License. (Must be obtained within 10 years of appointment to position) and a Class A CDL (Must be obtained within 2 years of appointment to position).
For those persons less qualified, the following training levels have been established:
Grade 5 Virginia Class 1 Wastewater Operator License, a Class A CDL and all relevant trade related apprenticeship courses, and 100% of on-the-job training skills
Grade 5a Virginia Class 1 Wastewater Operator License OR Completion of 22 trade related apprenticeship courses, 66% of on-the-job training skills, AND a Virginia Class 2 Wastewater Operator License
Grade 5b Virginia Class 2 Wastewater Operator License OR Completion of 12 trade related apprenticeship courses, 33% of on-the-job training skills AND a Virginia Class 3 Wastewater Operator License
If assigned to a training level, fully qualified level must be consistently pursued, as a condition of appointment. Failure to do so will result in removal from the position and potentially employment with HRSD
