GVEC is looking to hire you for the position of System Engineer - IT to deliver the unexpected with a willingness to continuously develop yourself, your department, and our organization. As a System Engineer - IT you will help design, implement, and support enterprise virtualization and hybrid cloud solutions with a strong emphasis on active-active, multi-site availability. The System Engineer - IT role focuses on VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox environments, automation, data protection and infrastructure optimization. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and is passionate about operational excellence, security and continuous improvement.
The minimum starting pay for this role is $91,000 plus bonuses that are tied to a multitude of organizational benchmarks set forth annually. Pay will be determined by skills, qualifications and experience.
- Design, implement and operate active-active virtualization architectures across multiple data centers for high availability and near zero-downtime failover
- Manage virtualization lifecycle: upgrades, migrations, capacity planning and performance tuning
- Implement automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like PowerShell, PowerCLI, Terraform, or Ansible
- Ensure high availability, disaster recovery and business continuity using Veeam, Rubrik, Zerto, or cloud-native DR solutions
- Establish and regularly test failover/failback runbooks, validate RPO/RTO objectives and orchestrate non-disruptive maintenance using live migration
- Architect and manage backup infrastructure and management (e.g., Veeam) including job design, repositories, immutability, testing and recovery
- Monitor and optimize infrastructure using modern observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, DynaTrace)
- Enforce security best practices, including Zero Trust principles, patch management and compliance standards
- Provide Tier 2/3 support and mentor junior team members
- Participate in on-call rotation for 24/7 operations- 4+ years of experience with VMware technologies (ESXi, vCenter, vSphere)
- Strong knowledge of virtualization, storage and networking concepts (VLANs, DVS, SAN/NAS)
- Storage & Networking: Solid knowledge of enterprise storage (SAN/NAS), storage policies and virtualization networking (VLANs, LAGs, Distributed Virtual Switches)
- Active-Active Expertise: Hands-on experience with multi-site active-active designs
- Proficiency in scripting and automation (PowerShell, PowerCLI, or similar)
- Solid understanding of security frameworks and compliance requirements
- Excellent troubleshooting skills across computer?, storage and network layers. Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly and confidently
- Ability to effectively evaluate and manage conflicting priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
- Self-motivation, a strong work ethic and impeccable integrity
- A team player open to constructive criticism to help evolve the team
- Ability to lift items such as servers or networking equipment
- Experience with VMware Horizon or modern VDI solutions
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Knowledge of converged/hyperconverged infrastructure (Cisco UCS, Nutanix)
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Vendor management and budgeting experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- VMware certifications (VCP-DCV or higher) preferred
- Cloud certifications (Azure Administrator, AWS Solutions Architect) a plus
- Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE) preferred
