Are you an experienced substation professional ready to take the lead in maintaining and enhancing critical electric infrastructure? The Public Works Commission (PWC) is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electric Substation Technician to join our Electric Systems team. This is a lead-level role for someone who thrives in high-voltage environments and is passionate about safety, reliability, and technical excellence.
What You’ll Do:
As a Senior Electric Substation Technician, you’ll lead the installation, repair, and maintenance of substation equipment and controls. Your responsibilities will include:
•Installing and maintaining transformers, regulators, load tap changers, circuit breakers, and DCC power systems.
•Performing electrical and mechanical testing on substation equipment.
•Troubleshooting wiring, relay, and fiber connection issues.
•Operating controls to isolate circuits for maintenance and restoration.
•Conducting inspections and repairs on substations, capacitors, and related equipment.
•Responding to unscheduled outages and restoring service.
•Testing ground grids and monitoring transformer temperatures.
•Working in confined spaces and around energized systems.
You’ll operate under the supervision of the Substation Field Supervisor and play a key role in ensuring the reliability and safety of PWC’s electric infrastructure.
What You Bring:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
•Thorough knowledge of electrical theory, safety regulations, and substation maintenance practices.
•Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
•Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
•Ability to supervise and mentor others.
•Comfortable working in confined spaces and under varying weather conditions.
•Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
Choose one of the following:
•Option A: Associate degree or certification in electrical technology, industrial operations, or related field + 4 years of substation experience including lead responsibilities.
•Option B: High school diploma or equivalent + 6 years of experience, including 3 years as a Substation Technician.
•Option C: Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Equipment Operated:
•Substation testing equipment, hand and power tools, boom trucks, and other specialized tools as required.
Special Requirements:
•Must pass a Functional Employment Test (FET) .
•Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) .
Physical Requirements:
•Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, including working in confined spaces and performing heavy manual tasks in all weather conditions.
Safety Hazards:
•Exposure to high voltage, electrical current, chemicals, confined spaces, and environmental conditions such as dust, fumes, and extreme temperatures.
Protective Equipment:
•As required by the PWC Safety Manual .
