Universal Plant Services (UPS) is seeking a reliable Shop Laborer to join our team. This position plays a key role in supporting daily shop operations and assisting mechanics, machinists, and other skilled trades. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-minded, and eager to learn in a fast-paced industrial environment.
As the Shop Laborer, you will assist the shop team in daily operations by performing general labor and support tasks. The role helps keep the shop running smoothly by helping with the preparation, cleanup, parts handling, material movement, and basic mechanical or assembly tasks under supervision. The laborer ensures a safe, clean, and organized environment and supports more skilled trades (mechanics, machinists,) as needed.
- Assist in moving, loading, unloading, staging, and storing parts, materials, and equipment in the shop.
- Assist in fabrication tasks, fixtures, and tooling as needed for machines or repair work.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks: oiling, cleaning machinery, replacing minor components under direction.
- Assist with inspection of parts and inventory.
- Follow safety rules and policies; wear required PPE; support shop safety programs.
- Assist in maintaining shop tools – cleaning, organizing, and restocking.
- Perform preventative maintenance to minimize downtime and extend the life of equipment.
- Utilize precision tools and diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve mechanical issues.
- Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Document all repairs, maintenance tasks, and parts used in accordance with company procedures.
- Collaborate with other team members to ensure timely and efficient completion of work orders.
- Previous experience in a shop, plant maintenance, or industrial environment is a plus.
- Basic mechanical aptitude; ability to use hand tools, power tools safely.
- Ability to follow direction and work under pressure.
- Effective communication skills: ability to ask questions and follow instructions.
- Ability to work safely, knowledge of/use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- NCCER Millwright certification helpful.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential for this position.
- Supply your own basic mechanic tools.
- This is a full-time position, with a minimum expectation of 40+ hours per week. Additional hours, including evenings or weekends, may be required based on business needs.- Must be willing to work overtime when needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Previous shop experience in an industrial environment.
- Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed.- Frequently lift and carry materials, parts or tools weighing up to 50 +lbs.
- Must be able to frequently climb a ladder.
- Bend, stoop, squat, kneel, reach overhead.
- Able to stand/walk for extended periods.
- Good Hand-eye coordination, ability to use both hands.
- Occasionally work with heights or in tight/awkward spaces.
- Knowledge of Manual machine tools, precision, and measurement equipment
- Knowledge of rotating equipment types, lifting & handling equipment, and other related tools/software
