Shear Operator

The Shear Operator is responsible for safely operating the shearing machine. The operator uses the machine to cut alloy sheets and plates according to the given specifications, sketches, or shop travelers.

Responsibilities and Duties

As a minimum, the following is a basic description of typical duties and responsibilities expected of the Shear Operator. These duties are not exhaustive and are subject to change as the needs of the organization require.

- Interpret sketches, read shop orders and other related technical data in order to determine the machine’s setup and control settings.

- Retrieve material from the plate racks using crane, forklift or a handcraft.

- Position guide and adjust the machine controls in order to set and regulate the machine factors.

- Mark the plate with reference points using a measuring tape or “Shadow Line”.

- Observe the operation of the machine during the cut, checking for proper cutting and for repositioning.

- Inspect, measure, and mark each piece cut with the accurate alloy, spec, heat, and size on the material.

- Scan on and off of the order being processed and for processing any paperwork associated with the order, which includes processing of bar code tags, cycle counts, as well as exception report inventory counts.

- Keep immediate work area clean and organized throughout the day.

- Use precision when operating tools such as tape measures, micrometers, nibblers and calipers.

- Crosstrain other team members as assigned.

- Adhere to all CMI’s safety rules, regulations, and quality standards.

- Adhere to all CMI’s handbook policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

- High School diploma or equivalent

- One year warehouse experience

- Strong work ethic; self-motivated

- Operate with high integrity, maintaining positive relations with co-workers, customers, and suppliers

- Excellent written and oral communication skills

- Excellent organizational, problem-solving skills, and time management skills

- Ability to effectively multi-task and work independently on assigned tasks

- Microsoft Office proficiency, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
