We are seeking an experienced Senior Tailings Engineer to join our North American Legacy Assets (NALA) group. This is your opportunity to play a vital role in supporting the TSF management requirements within a world class operation and offers a varied and diverse work environment across the NALA portfolio.

The role in a nutshell:

Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services, the Senior Tailings Engineer will support ongoing TSF management requirements, tailings-focused projects and construction scopes within the North American Legacy Assets (NALA) portfolio.

This position contributes to a variety of engineering design management initiatives and projects within a world-class operation as well as opportunities to expand your knowledge and apply your skills in tailings and project management across various NALA mine sites, while also sharing your insights through participation in project committee reviews.

This role will involve a blend of fieldwork and office-based tasks, offering a varied and diverse work environment across the NALA portfolio.

More specifically, you will be expected to:

Lead tailings storage facility (TSF) closure design projects by guiding geotechnical engineering analysis, coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams, and overseeing all project phases from conceptual to construction.

Review and provide input on trade-off studies, engineering reports, drawings, specifications, and feasibility through detailed engineering studies.

Support and guide tailings-related scopes of work involved in the NALA TSF projects, providing input to 3rd party engineering firms and liaising between project teams and external geotechnical consultants.

Plan and participate construction activities for TSF closure, ensuring designs meet TSF and closure standards while integrating industry best practices.

Act as Engineer of Record (EOR) for select low-consequence TSFs at NALA sites and define work scopes and performance expectations for EORs and consultants.

Implement and maintain commitments under the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and relevant guidelines such as ICMM, HSEC Standards, and regulatory requirements.

Participate in HSEC Assurance Audits, lead close-out of findings, and guide TSF risk assessments (FMEA, bowtie, critical control standards, and verifications).

Provide governance, stewardship, and risk oversight for TSFs, ensuring quality and timely delivery of projects across the portfolio.

Mentor junior staff on routine dam inspections for tailings and water-retaining structures, support reporting, and provide recommendations to Engineering, Environment, and Projects teams.

Offer technical leadership on tailings management issues, collaborate with internal experts, and contribute to safety programs and internal peer reviews.

Do you have what it takes?

Bachelor’s or Honours degree (or equivalent) in Civil, Geotechnical, or Water Resources Engineering, Master’s degree in a related field (beneficial).

15 years of geotechnical engineering experience in design, monitoring, performance analysis, reporting, and stewardship of tailings and/or water dams, plus extensive practical field experience.

Significant project management skills, particularly in TSF or water dam projects, with beneficial construction background.

Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario, holding a valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).

In-depth understanding of tailings behavior, technologies, geotechnical investigation methods and analyses, soil mechanics, and surface/subsurface monitoring systems.

Skilled in working with regulators, Engineers of Record, and other external specialists, with strong knowledge of national/provincial regulations, permitting processes, and best practice guidelines (CDA, MAC, ICMM, GISTM).

Experienced in dam inspections, including Dam Safety Reviews (DSR) and Dam Safety Inspections (DSI).

Travel: You will be required to travel to the different sites approximately 30% of the time and work with colleagues located in different time zones on a regular basis.

Language: Advanced proficiency in English (verbal and written) is mandatory. The knowledge of French is beneficial.

Location: Corporate office in Toronto.
