The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. AESO is undergoing a transformative restructuring of Alberta’s electricity market through the Restructured Energy Market (REM) program—a multi-year, enterprise-wide initiative focused on implementing a new Energy Settlement System (ESS) and integrating it with other mission-critical systems and processes across the organization.
The ESS will enable the AESO to operate the Alberta electricity market with greater efficiently and reliably – ensuring power gets to where it needs to be at the right time and cost.
Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Cloud Applications, we are seeking a Senior Functional Analyst with a strong background in the electric utility sector and deep experience in complex system implementations to join our dynamic team.
This role will be a key position in the implementation of the ESS and will transition to a role on the product team for ongoing operations for the lifecycle of the ESS system, ensuring the solution meets the evolving needs of the organization while delivering value across the market.

- Manage epics, user stories, tasks and backlog as required, supporting SCRUM and Project Management with delivery.
- Establish end-to-end process diagrams; outlining as-is and defining to-be to support the design and delivery of the ESS solution.
- Identification of gaps, or opportunities for enhancements or efficiencies across product delivery
- Work with cross functional teams; supporting and contributing to Quality Assurance, Technical Teams, Change Management etc.
- Support and validate vendor design documents, ensuring consistency and completeness across business requirements.
- Support SIT/UAT testing, issue triage and root cause analysis during design / implementation.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation across business requirements, functional specifications, traceability and change.
- Lead solution validation sessions with key stakeholders; ensuring delivered functionality meets business need.
- Analyze and report on data to identify metrics, KPIs and business insights across design and delivery.
- Provide expertise and guidance on industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and emerging technologies in the electrical utility sector.
- Support cross-functional organizational activities; training, communications.
- Support the delivery of operational readiness and cutover planning.
- Continue to support the ongoing design and development of the ESS product; ensuring the solution aligns with the evolving needs of the business and market.
- Participate in root cause analysis, resolving and providing solutions for problems post implementation.
- Assist with application configuration and set up to ensure all requirements & user interface are met
- Implementing changes to the application using the SDLC.- A Degree or Diploma in Business Administration, Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science or a related field with 10+ years of experience in business analysis or a related role.
- Strong technical acumen with the ability to understand system architecture, APIs, data structures, integrations etc.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques, such as SQL, Excel, and data visualization software.
- Experience in JavaScript and Python, Azure cloud and on-prem system designs.
- Experience in both agile and waterfall delivery methodologies.
- Establishing strong business and technical relationships to facilitate trust and collaboration across team members and partners.
- Experience across large scale project implementation; in-house legacy applications, introduction of new technology etc.
- Experience with Azure DevOps.
- Experience in the electrical utility industry is an asset.
- Experience in settlement systems is an asset.
- Experience and knowledge of change management principles and methodologies to ensure stakeholder buy-in.
- Experience managing multiple cross-functional projects to implement new and complex business lines.
- Experience in leading analysis and design across end-to-end system implementations.
- Experience working on a Product Team as a functional analyst post implementation.
- Experience taking the lead to gather requirements, facilitate delivery, and mentor other team members on the Product Team for the lifecycle of the system.
- Experience with implementing and maintaining CSOX IT controls.
