Purpose Of Role
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Environmental & Permitting, the Sr. Environmental Scientist is responsible for supporting the project/operation by leading and working as a member of the team in the development of environmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Best Management (BMP).
Roll Accountabilities
- Ensuring compliance and assessing impacts associated with an operating copper mine, industrial processing facility and construction site.
- Effectively communicate with regulatory and government agencies, and professional
- associations, to develop and maintain good working relationships and regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate monitoring of project/operation emissions, waste management and process related environmental aspects.
- Knowledge/experience with local, state and federal environmental regulation and programs (CWA, CAA, RCRA, NPDES, APP, drinking water, etc.).
- Supervision of surface water, groundwater, stormwater, soil and other monitoring in support of environmental compliance programs and permitting.
- Provide technical guidance, leadership and mentorship within environmental department.
- Promote and communicate environmental training/awareness/standards to employees and contractors to minimize impact risk.
- Conduct environmental compliance inspections of work areas and job sites.
- Data analysis, QA/QC, records management and preparation of reports.
- Use of electronic data management and compliance reporting software.
- Serve as Project Manager or technical expert on environmental projects.
- Work with the Project development team to ensure construction complies with environmental plans, policies, permits, etc.
- Maintain records, compose correspondence, and perform other administrative activities as necessary to meet compliance requirements.
- Lead compliance audits, assess risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Hydrology, Forestry, Environmental/Natural Resource Management or other related degree.
- Minimum of 5 years’ environmental compliance experience, preferably at a mining or industrial manufacturing operation.
- Experience planning, assigning and supervising work for employees or contractors.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of professionals from varied departments and disciplines effectively and with limited supervision.
- Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with MS Office (Excel, Word, etc.), geoportal and compliance tracking software preferred.
- Possess or willingness to obtain training, certification or licensure appropriate to the job may include HAZWOPER, Method 9, DOT, EMS Auditor, Asbestos, Water Treatment Operator, or CHMM.

The work environment will necessitate work near moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions such as hot and/or dry conditions. Work will be conducted in locations where noise, fumes, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration may exist. Majority of work will be outside.

Employees must be able to perform the physical functions of operating a motor vehicle, including use of eyes, ears, arms, hands, legs, and feet.
