The Role

Our Environmental Field Operations - Gas/Oil department is seeking an Environmental Scientist Sr for their Redhawk Power Plant located in West Valley (Phoenix) who will utilize advanced knowledge of the natural sciences and experience gained through practical field experience to protect the environment.

What you will be doing:

- Interpret regulatory requirements, identify problems and provide solutions that minimize hazards to the health of the environment and the population.

- Conduct advanced scientific studies to support the safe and efficient operation of power plant units within the organization.

- Monitor the operations of facilities for environmental compliance with Federal and local regulations pertaining to hazardous and solid waste, used oil, Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Oil Pollution Act (SPCC), Arizona Aquifer Protection Program, RCRA, EPCRA/SARA, CERCLA, Storm Water Pollution Plans, DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations and identifies potential non-compliance issues. This includes submitting regulatory compliance reports associated with these programs on a continuous basis.

- Regularly review and interpret the most complex analytical data to determine clean up levels on complex projects.

- Conduct scientific and/or cause investigations which include identifying, analyzing, and interpreting trends and patterns generally using established precedents and standards, and develops and recommends solutions to management to remedy negative trends.

- Assist with the Operation, maintenance and monitoring of operating systems (e.g., water treatment and waste disposal) and air quality systems (specifically Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems) to ensure compliance with established guidelines and permits.

- Develop and oversees the use of appropriate sampling and monitoring procedures and guidelines.

- Prepare and revise technical documents for internal and external audit groups.

- Participate in the evaluation and review of proposed and existing codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines to determine the impact on programs and facility modifications.

- May, on occasion, interface directly with regulatory agencies on questions of permit implementation and regulatory interpretation.

- Develop documents such as permit applications and regulatory submittals. Interfaces with multiple internal departments to evaluate the impact of permits/regulations, and to coordinate comments on draft documents.

- Develops and delivers environmental training to all levels of the organization.

- Provide technical guidance in interpreting and monitoring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry guidelines.

- Review technical documents to ensure their accuracy and completeness.

- Keep current on the changes developing in the regulations and legislation.

- Provide leadership to less experienced scientists and to technicians.

- May act as lead person or technical expert on small to medium projects.

- Assists with the operation and maintenance of Environmental Management Systems.

Minimum Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Earth Science or related science (such as Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Hydrology) OR other job-related field from an accredited college or university

- PLUS four (4) years' directly related experience in environmental (with at least two (2) years concentrated experience in Air, Water or Waste management systems);

- OR Master's degree in science related field PLUS two (2) years' experience in Environmental related position.

- In lieu of bachelors' degree, combination of college coursework and experience equaling eight (8) years. Certification or licensure preferred.

Hybrid:Hybrid:This role will sit 2-3 days a week in office at the Redhawk Power Plant with some travel (1-2 times a month) to the Yucca Plant. Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees). Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up. Role types are subject to change based on business need.*

CIP Requirement:This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. The applicant considered for this role will be required to obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment in this position. A full seven (7) year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process) to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.
